Rochester Red Wings News Release
Rochester Red Wings (17-26) @ Lehigh Valley IronPigs (18-24)
Coca-Cola Park - Allentown, PA - 1:35 p.m.
RHP Kyle Gibson (2-5, 3.92) vs. LHP Tom Cochran (0-1, 5.65)
TODAY'S GAME: The Red Wings and IronPigs play game 2 of their 4-game set Sunday afternoon (1:35 p.m.) from Coca-Cola Park in Allentown, PA after Lehigh Valley (Phillies) stole game one, 3-2, on an unearned run in the 8th inning. Rochester has now dropped 7 of their last 10 games and are now 15-15 since April 18 after beginning the season 2-11. The Wings currently sit in 5th-place in the IL North 8.0 games back of BUF and PAW... Meanwhile, the IronPigs are now 1.5 games clear of Rochester and in 4th place in the North... After this 4-game set, the Wings will have an off day Wednesday before beginning an 8-game homestand on Thursday against the Charlotte Knights (White Sox) at Frontier Field.
WITH A WIN TONIGHT...:
-The Wings will avoid falling to a tied for season-worse 10 games below .500 (15-25 on 5/15)
-The Wings will win just their 15th game at Coca-Cola Park since it opened in 2008 (14-27 @ LHV all-time)
MORE FROM LAST NIGHT...:
-The Wings turned a tied for season high 3 double plays (4x)... and hit into a tied for season-high 2 double plays (11x)
-Chris Herrmann's 7th inning double extended the Wings streak of recording at least one extra-base hit to 27 games.
-P.J. Walters turned in his 6th straight "quality start" (7 ip, 7 h, 2 r, 2 bb, 7 k)
GIBBY VS THE 'PIGS: RHP Kyle Gibson will make his 9th start of the season on Sunday and his 4th all-time start against Lehigh Valley which he is 1-0 with a 2.45 ERA (5 ER/18.1 IP) against... In fact, his last start against the IronPigs (his only other start at CCP) on 5/29/11, Gibson struck out a tied for career-high 10 as he allowed just 2 runs in 7.2 innings to earn his last win at any level until April 27 of this season vs. BUF (Tommy John surgery)... Gibson also made his first ever Triple-A start against the IronPigs on 8/13/10 at Frontier Field (N/D; 5.2 ip, 5 h, r).
STRUGGLING TO FIND HIS GROOVE: Gibson has struggled to be consistent this season from one start to the next as he has yet to but together back-to-back quality starts. In his odd starts (1, 3, 5 & 7), he has allowed a combined 2 ER in 26.2 IP (0.68 ERA), however in his even starts (GS number 2, 4, 6, & 8), Gibson has yielded 17 ER in 17 IP (9.00 ER)... If the trend continues, Gibson, making his 9th start of the year, should turn in a solid outing after allowing 4 runs on 7 hits in 3 innings his last time out against Durham on Tuesday. Of course, that start followed his 2nd career, 9-inn, CG-SHO on 5/8 @ TOL.
DE VRIES OPTIONED: On Saturday, RHP Cole De Vries was reinstated from the Major League disabled list (forearm strain) and optioned to Triple-A Rochester meaning De Vries will now be a full-time member of the Red Wings rotation... De Vries made his 3rd and final rehab start with the Red Wings on Wednesday and allowed 6 runs on 11 hits in 4 innings against Durham. Combined, the 28-year-old, Minnesota native went 0-1, 6.23 ERA (9 ER/13.0 IP) with 21 hits allowed and 2 HR in his 3 rehab starts with FTM (A+), NBR (AA) and Rochester... De Vries is scheduled to start game 3 of this series on Monday.
CHART-TOPPER: Red Wings 1B Chris Colabello extended his hitting streak to a 2013 team-high 10 games on Saturday night going 1-for-4 with an RBI single. Over the streak, the Triple-A rookie is hitting .459 (17-for-37) with 10 extra-base hits and 11 RBI as Colabello currently ranks 1st in the IL in hits (57), total bases (105) and extra-base hits (26). He is T-1st in HR (11), 2nd in doubles (15), 2nd in SLG (.640), 3rd in RBI (33), T-3rd batting average (.348) and 4th in OPS (1.046)... The Wings first baseman has also recorded at least one hit in 19 of his last 20 games overall (.395; 32-of-81, 11 2B, 5 HR, 14 R, 16 RBI)... He has feasted on RHP's batting .384 with all 11 HR's and 30 of his 33 RBI... Just .231-0-3 vs. LHP... Tom Cochran, a southpaw, gets the nod for the IronPigs on Sunday.
-Colabello is on pace to hit 36 HR and 110 RBI... It would be the first 30-HR, 100-RBI season by a Wing since Jim Fuller in 1973
WINGS VS. PIGS: The Wings have struggled against the IronPigs since taking 11 of 16 games from Lehigh Valley in 2008 -- the 'Pigs first year in the IL. Since 2009, Rochester is now just 26-39 against their North division rival and have not won a season series. The Red Wings haven't won a 4-game set against Lehigh Valley since taking 3 of 4 at Frontier Field on 8/13-8/16/10... The last time the Wings won a series in Lehigh Valley was 5/29-6/1/09 (3-1).
YOU FIRST?: After going 47-19 last year in games they scored first in, the Red Wings are currently just 10-12 this season in games they score the first run. The Wings are the only team in the league with a losing record when scoring first.
