Syracuse Mets News Release
Syracuse, NY - The Syracuse Chiefs were blanked by the Norfolk Tides, 6-0, Sunday afternoon. The loss split the series at two wins apiece after Syracuse dropped the last two games.
Norfolk (16-29) wasted no time before scoring in the first inning. With one out, Christian Walker earned a walk from Syracuse (22-20) starter Aaron Laffey. The next batter, Mike Yastrzemski, followed with a double into the left-center-field gap, plating Walker for a 1-0 Norfolk lead.
The Tides tallied again in the third inning. Leadoff batter L.J. Hoes started the frame with a double to right. A Walker single put Norfolk runners on the corners for Yastrzemski, who drove in Hoes with a sacrifice fly to left that improved the Tides' lead to 2-0.
Norfolk continued the scoring in the fourth. Back-to-back singles from Dariel Alvarez and Audry Perez put the first two runners aboard for the Tides. Sharlon Schoop moved both runners up a base with a sacrifice bunt, setting the table for Garabez Rosa. Rosa drove the first pitch he saw into center, which scored both Alvarez and Perez and pushed the score to 4-0. Rosa moved to second on Brian Goodwin's throw home. Rosa then advanced to third on a Michael Almanzar single, which prompted a Syracuse pitching change. Sam Runion came in for the Chiefs, getting Hoes, the first batter Runion faced, to ground out. Rosa came in to score on the play and the lead was 5-0. Laffey's day ended after three and one-third innings of work, giving up five earned runs and two walks while striking out one.
The Tides finished strong against Syracuse closer Rafael Martin in the ninth. Walker started the frame with a double to the left-center-field gap and came around to score on Yastrzemski's ground-rule double to right for a 6-0 lead. It was Yastrzemski's fourth double in his last seven at-bats.
After a day off Monday, the Chiefs resume play at NBT Bank Stadium Tuesday when they face the Charlotte Knights. Paolo Espino is scheduled to start for Syracuse opposite Jacob Turner for Charlotte. First pitch for the series opener is set for 6:35.
