Trenton Thunder News Release

A Chris Gittens sacrifice fly lifted the Thunder over the Akron RubberDucks, 3-2, in 10 innings on Monday night at ARM & HAMMER Park.

Two rehabbing Yankees players, Greg Bird and Billy McKinney, played in the game for the Thunder (23-13). Bird went 0-for-3 before being lifted after his scheduled seven innings of play, while McKinney went 0-for-4, playing the entire game.

Working with a 2-1 lead in the top of the ninth, Thunder reliever Kaleb Ort surrendered a one-out double to Daniel Salters, who then scored the tying run for the RubberDucks (21-16) on a single by Tyler Krieger. Trenton got consecutive two-out singles from Bruce Caldwell and Ryan Lidge in the bottom half, but both were left stranded.

In the tenth, Ort retired all three batters he faced, stranding the extra-inning tiebreaker runner at second. But the Thunder manufactured the winning run in the bottom half, as McKinney bunted tiebreaker runner Trey Amburgey to third, and after an intentional walk, Gittens' flyout to right field was deep enough to score Amburgey.

The Thunder had given starter Dillon Tate two runs of support via an Amburgey solo home run in the third, and a Mandy Alvarez RBI-groundout in the fourth. Tate pitched six scoreless innings, and Akron did not score until the seventh, when Caleb Frare yielded a RBI-double to Todd Hankins.

Your Thunder continue their homestand on Tuesday night at 7pm against the RubberDucks. RHP Erik Swanson (5-0, 0.52) will start for the Thunder, and RHP Dominic DeMasi (3-1, 3.48) will go for Akron. The first 1,525 fans ages 14 and up will receive a Nomar Garciaparra Bobblehead, presented by Capital Health. Tickets are available by phone at 609-394-3300 or online at TrentonThunder.com.
