Altoona Curve News Release
CURVE, Pa. - Altoona Curve outfielder Jason Martin has been named the Eastern League Player of the Week for the week of May 7-13, the league announced on Monday. Martin is the first Curve player to win any of the league's weekly awards this season.
Over his last six games since last Monday, Martin led the league in hitting with a .522 average (12-for-23), adding two homers, a double, eight RBIs and seven runs scored.
A native of Corona, Calif., Martin has picked up multiple hits in each of his last five games, including back-to-back three-hit games over the weekend in Reading. On Sunday, he went 3-for-4 with a two-run homer and a two-run single in the Curve's 7-1 win over the Fightin Phils to become the first Altoona hitter to collect four RBIs in a game this season.
Martin also led the E.L. for the week in OPS (1.403) and ranked near the top of the circuit in on-base percentage (.577/2nd), slugging percentage (.825/2nd), hits (12/T-2nd), runs scored (7/T-3rd), total bases (19/T-3rd), home runs (2/T-3rd) and RBIs (8/T-3rd).
The 22-year-old left-handed batter leads the Pirates organization and ranks fifth in the Eastern League for the season with a .346 batting average for the season and sits tied for third among Pittsburgh minor leaguers with four homers. He is also tied for the league lead with four triples.
An eighth-round draft pick by the Astros in 2013, Martin is playing in his first season with the Pirates organization after being traded along with 3B Colin Moran, RHP Joe Musgrove and RHP Michael Feliz to Pittsburgh by Houston in exchange for RHP Gerrit Cole on January 13.
The selection marks the third weekly award pick in Martin's career. He was also named California League Player of the Week on May 29, 2016 and Texas League Player of the Week on July 23, 2017.
Martin is the first Curve player to be named Eastern League Player of the Week since Jordan Luplow received the honor last June.
The Curve open a seven-game homestand on Monday night at Peoples Natural Gas Field with the series opener against the Richmond Flying Squirrels. For tickets or more information, visit AltoonaCurve.com, call 877.99.CURVE or stop by the PNG Field box office.
