Thunder Triumph on Walkoff in Tenth
Published on May 5, 2018 under Eastern League (EL1)
Trenton Thunder News Release
The Thunder rode stingy pitching and timely hitting to a 3-2 win in ten innings over the Harrisburg Senators on Saturday night in front of a crowd of 5,237 at ARM & HAMMER Park.
Rehabbing Yankees third baseman went 0-for-4 in the game, and is a combined 1-for-7 with a RBI in two rehab games for the Thunder.
With Mandy Alvarez on second base as the tiebreaker runner in the bottom of the tenth for the Thunder (17-10), Ryan Lidge laid down a sacrifice bunt to advance Alvarez to third. Gosuke Katoh was intentionally walked, and Chris Gittens delivered a sacrifice fly to center field for Trenton's first walkoff victory of the season.
Jordan Foley received the win in relief. The right-hander had allowed a game-tying solo homer to Harrisburg's (10-17) Drew Ward with two out in the ninth, but benefitted in the top of the tenth from a heads-up play by Alvarez that resulted in the Senators' tiebreaker runner being tagged out between third and home to keep the game tied.
Harrisburg had scored first in the game on a Daniel Johnson RBI-single off Thunder starter Will Carter in the fifth inning. But the Thunder tied the score in the bottom half on a RBI-double by Gittens, who eventually scored the go-ahead run on a bunt single by Bruce Caldwell.
James Reeves and Kaleb Ort combined for three innings of scoreless relief for Trenton after Carter's five strong innings, and Caldwell extended his team-best on-base streak to 14 games.
The win was the Thunder's fourth straight, and its tenth in 13 games.
Your Thunder continue their homestand on Sunday afternoon at 1pm against the Senators. LHP Ryan Bollinger (0-0, 0.00) will start for the Thunder, and RHP Luis Reyes (2-2, 6.00) will go for Harrisburg. Kids will be able to run the bases after the game. Tickets are available by phone at 609-394-3300 or online at TrentonThunder.com.
