Stockton Thunder News Release
STOCKTON, Calif. - The Stockton Thunder, a two-time recipient of the ECHL "Award of Excellence," announced its seventh annual "Teddy Bear Toss" event is scheduled at Stockton Arena for Saturday, Jan. 21, when the Thunder hosts the Las Vegas Wranglers at 7:30 p.m.
Presented by News10, Jackson Rancheria Casino & Hotel, KAT Country 103 and Miracle Mile Realty, the annual event aims to deliver new or gently used stuffed animals to local disadvantaged youth. The teddy bears and additional stuffed animals will be delivered after the weekend to local nonprofit agencies, courtesy of the United Way of San Joaquin County.
Fans are invited to bring and throw teddy bears or other stuffed animals onto the ice on Saturday, immediately following the Thunder's first goal of the game.
Last year's Teddy Bear Toss, played before a season high crowd of 9,482, netted a record 5,835 bears and other stuffed animals to donate to the United Way of San Joaquin County, who in turn distributed them to local children's charities. The record donation helped raise the six-year total to over 24,300 stuffed animals donated from fans to underprivileged children in the San Joaquin County.
Volunteers from the Woodbridge Fire Department, the Stockton Fire Department, the United Way and other volunteers helped collect the donated stuffed animals, which were carried off the ice in beds of pickup trucks courtesy of Chase Chevrolet of Stockton.
The Thunder defeated the Ontario Reign in last year's game, 4-1, and forward Jim McKenzie scored the Thunder's first goal of the game in the first period.
The event has also meant success on the ice and at the box office for the Thunder. In six games of the annual event, the Thunder is undefeated in regulation in five of them at 3-1-2. Coming in droves for the annual event, Thunder fans have averaged 9,311 in attendance and five of the six annual games have attracted sellout crowds to Stockton Arena.
Group seats of 10 or more tickets are available for a discounted rate by calling the Thunder at (209) 373-1500.
