Defenseman Benn Olson Assigned to Alaska

Defenseman Benn Olson has been assigned to the Alaska Aces from the Bridgeport Sound Tigers of the American Hockey League, Aces Head Coach Rob Murray announced on Thursday. Olson is a fourth year pro, who has split his career between the AHL and ECHL. He is expected to make his Aces debut this weekend against the Idaho Steelheads on Friday and Saturday when the Aces complete their 11-game home stand. Tickets are on sale now. Olson, 24, has spent the first half of this season in Bridgeport where he appeared in 17 games. The 6'4", 220 lbs. physical blue liner has one goal and 74 penalty minutes this season. Last season Olson spent the majority of the year with the Cincinnati Cyclones of the ECHL. He spent 43 games with the Cyclones and registered one goal, three assists, and 153 penalty minutes. He earned two call ups to the AHL. His first call up was for a single game with the Milwaukee Admirals, before a second call up led to him finishing the season playing 17 games with the Sound Tigers.

He turned pro in the 2008-2009 season with the AHL's Albany River Rats. He played 36 games, and registered four assists and 140 PIM. He also played five games that season for the ECHL's Florida Everblades. He added 50 games with the Everblades the following season, while spending nine in Albany. In his pro career, Olson has appeared in 178 games - 98 in the ECHL and 80 in the AHL. In those games, he has a combined 21 points (2g, 19a) and 648 PIM. Prior to turning pro, the Port McNeil, BC native played four seasons in the WHL with the Kamloops Blazers and Seattle Thunderbirds. He totaled 29 points (3g, 26a) ant 746 PIM in 244 junior games.
