Thunder stymies WhiteWings, take 6-2 win

EDINBURG -- The McAllen Thunder gave up a run in the top of the first inning, then pounced on the Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings for four runs on five hits in the bottom of the frame en route to a 6-2 victory at Edinburg Stadium Saturday night.

The bombardment sent WhiteWings starting pitcher Geovawy Reyes to the showers in the opening inning, with two outs. Eddie Dennis Jr. came in and got the third out,

Meanwhile, Thunder starter -- and finisher -- Frank James gave up another run to the WhiteWings in the second on a double by Mario Mercedes, driving in Rudy Van.

But, James remained in control throughout the game and finshed the night with the two runs on five hits and walked one.

Four WhiteWing pitchers, meanwhile, walked 10 Thunder battlers and gave up eight hits.

In that opening inning, Thunder lead off batter Craig Hertler was hit by a Reyes pitch, followed by a single by Mike Demperio. Antoin Gray followed with as double, sending Hetler and Demperio home. After two outs, Nick Mahin hit a single and Nathan Tomaszewski blasted a double, sending Gray and Mahin to home plate.

The loss left the WhiteWings, who were in second place going into the game, with a 10-7 record, while the Thunder are 5-13.

The two clubs move their activity to Harlingen Field Monday and Tuesday to close out the four-game series. Gametimes are 7:05 p.m.
