Thunder Stop Tying Run at Plate, Cats Split Series

May 31, 2013 - United League Baseball (ULB)
Fort Worth Cats News Release

The Cats lost a heartbreaker on Friday night as the McAllen Thunder rallied in the ninth inning to win the game 6-5 and split the four-game series.

Fort Worth (6-2) jumped ahead early, plating four runs in the second on four hits, including left fielder Cameron Monger's three-RBI triple.

After McAllen (5-3) added a run in the third, the Cats got it back when first baseman David Bergin launched his third home run of the season to make it 5-1.

That would be the last Cats run of the game. The Thunder scored a run in the sixth and seventh inning to cut into the lead and Fort Worth closer Boomer Potts came on for the save in the ninth.

The Thunder got to Potts for three runs in the inning, the game winning run coming on an infield single by second baseman Jacinto Cipriota.

The Cats showed some life in the bottom of the ninth by loading the bases with one out, but the Thunder sealed the win as Alex Foltz was thrown out at home by center fielder Cody Bishop on a Cameron Monger sacrifice fly. Foltz collided with Lucas Nakandakare at the plate, but the catcher held on to the ball for the final out.

The Cats will take on the Edinburg Roadrunners (2-6) on Saturday in their first road trip of the season. Fort Worth last swept the Roadrunners in a four-game series at home to begin the season.

The Cats next home game will be Thursday, June 6 when they take on the San Angelo Colts.
