Wichita Thunder News Release

Denver, CO - A shoot-out erupted at the Denver Coliseum on Friday night, with the Denver Cutthroats scoring three unanswered goals in the third period to upend the Thunder 6-4 in the front half of a back-to-back between the two teams. Jason Wilson scored twice in his Thunder debut while Andrew Martens added a goal and an assist in the losing effort. Wichita drops to 1-2-1 on the season with one more meeting with the Cutthroats tomorrow night at the Denver Coliseum.

Both teams got on the scoreboard in the opening frame with the Thunder drawing first blood. Wilson, in his first game since being assigned by the New York Rangers, drove the net and put home a rebound off a shot from Jon Booras at 4:55. Denver answered at 16:57 right after a Thunder penalty expired. JP Chabot caught a pass in close and beat Torrie Jung to even up the score at one.

The Cutthroats carried over the momentum from the end of the first and added two goals in 38 seconds. Garett Bembridge scored at 1:45 after coming out of the corner along the goal line and putting it through Jung to give Denver a 2-1 advantage. Chabot added his second of the game at 2:23 when he circled around the net, got to the right hash between the rings and fired a wrister to make it 3-1.

The Thunder wouldn't be out-done, however, as Robinson scored his first of the season at 11:08. Burke Gallimore came down the right wing on a two-on-one, let a wrist shot go that came off the leg of Kent Patterson and Robinson followed up the rebound and put it home. A few minutes later, Wichita added its second power play goal of the night when Mike Wilson found Jason Wilson across the Denver penalty killing unit and he put a one-timer just inside the left post to tie it at three.

Wichita took a brief 4-3 lead at the start of the third period, adding its third power play goal of the night. Martens caught a neat pass in the slot and beat Patterson to make it 4-3. Denver then answered with three consecutive goals to pull away and grab the win. AJ Gale caught a pass from Troy Schwab and buried a one-timer to tie the game at four. Michael Schumacher added a pair of goals, scoring the game-winner at 6:55 and his second at 13:43, handing the Thunder a 6-4 loss.

Booras and Jesse Dudas had two assists on the night. Wichita came into the game with just one second-period goal and doubled that adding two tonight. Jung took the loss, stopping 21 of 27 shots while Patterson earned the win, stopping 30 of 34 shots he faced.

Wichita was 3-for-8 on the power play. Denver went 0-for-4.

The Thunder remains in Denver tomorrow for its last meeting at the Denver Coliseum against the Cutthroats. The next Thunder home game is Friday, November 1st against the Brampton Beast, which is Faith and Fellowship night, followed by a post-game concert with Abandon Kansas!
