Thunder Drop Series Opener

Edinburg, Texas - Mario Mercedes drove in three runs, helping the Rio Grande Valley Whitewings (10-6) to an 8-3 victory over the McAllen Thunder (4-13) on Saturday at Edinburg Stadium.

Mercedes doubled in the second inning and singled in the third inning to pace the Whitewings offense.

The Rio Grande Valley Whitewings relied on Celson Polanco to eat up innings en route to the win. Polanco allowed one earned run, five hits and one walk while striking out six over eight innings of work.

The Rio Grande Valley Whitewings could not get anything going as long as Jeff Sakowski was on the mound. Sakowski gave up just one hit, allowed one earned run, walked one and struck out two during his five innings of work.

Kedrick Martin ended up on the wrong side of the pitching decision, charged with his second loss of the year. He allowed six runs in four innings, walked one and struck out none.

Michael Lewis and Mike Goss drove in runs for the Thunder in defeat.

The Thunder will end the two game mini-series against the Rio Grande Valley White wings on Sunday evening at Edinburg Baseball Stadium. The Thunder will start left-hander Frank James (1-1) versus a starter to be name for the White wings with the first pitch scheduled at 7:05 p.m.
