Thunder Drop Second-Straight Shootout to Oilers

Wichita, KS - Wichita fought back to tie the game early in the third period, only to falter for the second-straight contest in a shootout, losing 2-1 to the Tulsa Oilers on Friday night at INTRUST Bank Arena. Jarred Mohr recorded his third of the season while both goaltenders, Torrie Jung of Wichita and Shane Madolora of Tulsa, stole the show with their terrific performances. Wichita is 5-2-2 this season against the Oilers this and won't see Tulsa until March 9th. The Oilers victory pushes their winning streak to five games while the Thunder have collected at least a point in their last seven.
Tulsa was able to score first to break the tie at 9:13 of the second period. Patrick Schafer went to the front of the net and put home a Justin Fox shot that gave the Oilers a 1-0 lead. Jung, who was making his seventh-straight start, felt that the puck was kicked in the net, but the goal stood. Wichita was able to stave off a four-minute Oilers power play a couple of minutes later when Jon Madden was sent off for charging and assessed an extra two minute for unsportsmanlike conduct. Wichita led in the shot department 28-16 through the first forty minutes.
Wichita came out with a ton of energy to start the third period and it paid off three minutes into the frame. Mohr let a low shot go from the left point and the puck found its way through the legs of Madolora to pull the Thunder even with Tulsa at one. Down the stretch, Wichita continued to drive the net and had plenty of scoring chances, including a wide-open opportunity with around 5 minutes left from Matt Summers who was unable to get it past Madolora's glove.
For the second-straight time, the two teams would need overtime and eventually a shootout. Matt Robinson and Michel Beausoleil were both stopped in round one. Ryan Menei and Ben Gordon put Tulsa up in rounds two and three with goals. Neil Trimm kept Wichita alive in round four with his first shootout goal of the season. The Oilers, however, would claim the shootout when Fox beat Jung in round five and handed Wichita its fourth shootout loss of the season, losing 2-1.
Robinson kept his scoring-streak alive with an assist in the contest, which is now at six games. Wichita held Menei at bay, only allowing him two shots on net and ending his goal-scoring streak at four games. The story of the night was goaltending as both sparkled in net. Jung suffered his second shootout loss, stopping 22 of 23 shots he faced while Madolora won his ninth of the season, stopping 41 of 42 shots. Tonight is the third time he has made 40 or more saves against the Thunder this season.
Wichita went 0-for-5 on the power play while Tulsa was 0-for-4.
Wichita hosts the Allen Americans for the first time this season. Cops vs. Firefighters will take place at 5:30 p.m. SpongeBob SquarePants will be in attendance.
