Wichita Thunder News Release
WICHITA, KS - The Wichita Thunder dropped a 6-5 exhibition decision to the Tulsa Oilers on Wednesday night at the Wichita Ice Center. Newcomer Alex Hager scored the game-tying goal on the power play with just 31 seconds left in regulation, before Tulsa's Chris Kovalcik netted the game winner in the shootout.
The Thunder trailed 3-0 more than halfway through the contest, before scoring four unanswered goals beginning with Mike Batovanja's tally 15:28 into the second period. Mike Carmody, Chris Tarkir, and Connor MacDonald all followed with third period goals exactly eight minutes apart, with MacDonald giving Wichita its first lead of the night at 4-3.
Tulsa scored two straight, both on the power play, to regain the lead. Already with an assist in the game, Hager tied the score at 19:29 with assists from Carmody and Keith Detlefsen.
For preseason purposes, there was no overtime period, sending the 5-5 game directly to a shootout. With both teams having gone scoreless in their first two tries, Kovalcik scored against Thunder goaltender Ryan Dutton. The Oilers then converted on their fourth shot, sealing the game after the Thunder missed on both their third and fourth attempts.
Wichita travels to Arizona to continue their preseason schedule with a pair of games Friday and Saturday against the defending champion Sundogs. The Thunder open their 17th season Friday October 17th against Mississippi, and return home for the first time this season Saturday October 18th against Oklahoma City.
Tickets are still available for the home opener. For more information, call the Thunder office at (316) 264-GOAL.
