Rage-Eagles Tilt Raises Funds for Les Borsheim

October 8, 2008 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Rocky Mountain Rage News Release

Loveland, Colo. - The Rocky Mountain Rage lost to the Colorado Eagles, 6-3, in the pre-season opener for both teams at the Budweiser Events Center, but the result took a backseat to the game's sole reason for being played - to raise funds for injured former Colorado player Les Borsheim. All proceeds from the game benefited Les' recovery efforts from a tragic motorcycle accident during the off-season, and the Eagles organization presented Les and his family with a check for $100,000 during the second intermission.

Special teams played a large role throughout the game as Colorado took a 2-0 first period lead behind a power play goal from Ryan Tobler at 6:25 and a short-handed effort from Riley Nelson at 12:27. Rocky Mountain cut the lead in half on the first of four lengthy five-on-threes for the club when Tyler Butler lit the lamp off a one-timer at 17:39.

The Rage tied the game 5:41 into the second period when Nathan O'Nabigon fired top shelf off a pretty feed from David Morelli, but Colorado quickly re-took the lead at 7:15, Ed McGrane tapping home a back-door pass from Tobler.

Rocky Mountain had plenty of opportunities to tie the game at three throughout the first half of the third period but failed to capitalize on four power play chances. The Eagles then re-established a two-goal margin at 9:38 when Nelson netted his second of the night. The Rage cut the lead back to one with another five-on-three power play goal from Simon Watson at 15:36, but Colorado's Adam Knight answered on the man advantage to make it a 5-3 contest at 17:21. Jon Jankus added an empty-netter in the waning moments for the final 6-3 margin.

The Rage conclude the pre-season on Friday, Oct. 10, when they welcome the expansion Rapid City Rush to Broomfield Event Center at 7:05 p.m. The club then opens the regular season on the road against the Laredo Bucks on Oct. 17.

Single-game tickets are now on sale for the pre-season tilt on Friday and all 32 regular season home games at Broomfield Event Center, including the home opener on Oct. 22 against the Eagles.
