San Angelo Colts News Release
San Angelo, Texas --- An early, five-run advantage allowed the McAllen Thunder to hang on and defeat the San Angelo Colts, 6-5, in their series finale Saturday night at Foster Field.
The Thunder took a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning, as shortstop Jorge Bishop, centerfielder Tim Battle and left fielder Joseph Hicks all scored. Battle hit an RBI single, and Hicks had an RBI fielder's choice. The Thunder also benefitted from two fielding errors.
Battle followed up his RBI base hit with a two-run homer in the third inning. The home run, his fifth of the year, brought home right fielder Cody Bishop. Battle went 3-for-4 on the night with three RBIs and two runs scored.
A sacrifice fly from designated hitter Vince Coleman, Jr. later in the inning gave the Thunder a comfortable, 6-1 lead.
Pitching dominated from the fourth through the eighth. Thunder starter Steven Romero (4-4) allowed just one run on two hits in 6 2/3 innings for the win. Colts' starter Jake Negrete (0-1) retired the last 13 batters he faced.
Although he finished strong, Negrete took the loss. He allowed six runs, four earned, on six hits in seven innings pitched.
The Colts rallied for four runs in the ninth inning against Thunder reliever Yunier Colon. Centerfielder Dan Evatt hit an RBI single that scored second baseman Jon Dziomba, and then catcher Bubby Williams crushed a three-run homer. It was his first home run of the season, and it brought home Evatt and right fielder Steve Rinaudo.
Despite the valiant, late inning effort, the Colts fell short and had their three-game winning streak snapped. The win improves McAllen to 14-22, while the loss drops San Angelo to 20-16.
The Colts begin a four-game series against the Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings Sunday night at Foster Field. Gates open at 5:05 p.m., and first pitch is set for 6:05 p.m.
The Colts are in the middle of an eight-game home stand. They begin their final series of the home stand Sunday against the Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings.
