Wichita Thunder News Release
Wichita, KS (August 30th) - The Wichita Thunder of the Central Hockey League announced today that they have released their schedule for the 2012-13 season.
Wichita is coming off a banner year in which the team tied a franchise-high 44 wins, won a Berry Conference title, claimed the Bud Poile Governor's Cup and went to the CHL Finals for the first time since 1998. The Thunder will begin the season with a pair of home games on opening weekend, hosting the Quad City Mallards on Friday, October 19th and the Tulsa Oilers on Saturday, October 20th.
The Central Hockey League will feature one 10-team conference this season, known as the Berry Conference. Wichita will renew their close rivalry with the Missouri Mavericks as the two teams will see other 10 times. At the beginning of November, Wichita and Missouri face each other in three-straight games. The Thunder will host the Mavericks at INTRUST Bank Arena on Friday, November 2nd, travel to Independence, MO the next night and return home on Sunday, November 4th. The Thunder will also take on rival, Tulsa, 10 times this season including six of those meetings at home. Wichita and Tulsa are both entering their 21st CHL season and are the sixth oldest franchises in all of minor league hockey.
The Thunder home schedule will feature 30 weekend games, including 13 games on a Friday and 11 games on a Saturday. Wichita will also host six Sunday games as well as home games on the night before Thanksgiving and the Wednesday after Christmas.
Identical to last year, the Thunder will play 11 of their first 17 games at INTRUST Bank Arena. Wichita led the league with 24 wins at home last season and will have a chance to get off to a fast start once again. During an eight-game stretch, Wichita will play seven at home from Friday, November 9th to Saturday, November 24th. The Thunder will finish the season playing two of their final three games on home-ice, including the season finale on Sunday, March 24th against Missouri. Of the 66 total games, Wichita will face every team in the league including Bloomington, a team the Thunder did not see a year ago.
"We are extremely excited for this upcoming season," commented Thunder owner Rodney Steven II. "Looking back at last year, we are very proud of our accomplishments and hope to exceed those. As we get closer to October, it is our goal to bring a championship to the city of Wichita."
The CHL Playoffs this season will feature the top eight point-getting teams and three rounds, all of which will be a best-of-seven format.
Individual tickets for all home games will go on sale in September. Season tickets are still available. A $50 dollar non-refundable deposit is required for all season tickets.
