Quad City Mallards News Release
MOLINE, Ill. (August 30, 2012) - The Quad City Mallards in conjunction with the Central Hockey League today announced a 66-game 2012-13 schedule that will see the Mallards open their third CHL regular season on Friday, October 19 in Wichita against the Thunder before playing their home opener on Saturday, October 27, at 7:05 p.m. against the Tulsa Oilers.
The Mallards' home curtain-raiser will be Quad City's second meeting in two nights with the Oilers and the Flock's third game of the season overall. Coach and general manager Terry Ruskowski's club will visit Tulsa on Friday, October 26 and then hit the ice for the first of 33 games at the i wireless Center the following evening
The Mallards' home slate is weighted heavily toward fan-friendly weekend dates. Twenty-six of the Mallards' home games will be played on Fridays, Saturdays or Sundays. The home opener is the first of the Flock's nine Saturday night home tilts. The Mallards will play ten Friday games on home ice. Each of the Mallards' seven Sunday home games will face off at 4:05 p.m., while all other home contests will begin at 7:05 p.m.
The CHL this season will forgo a geographical split in favor of all ten of the league's clubs competing in a single conference, with the top eight finishers qualifying for the Presidents' Cup playoffs.
Despite the move away from a two-conference format, the league schedule will remain unbalanced. As a result, the Mallards' already heated rivalries with their nearest neighbors- the Bloomington Blaze and Missouri Mavericks- are sure to grow even more intense. The Mallards' games against the Blaze- who will clash with Quad City 18 times- and Mavericks- with whom the Mallards will tussle 13 times- will take up nearly half of the Flock's schedule. The Mallards will play a total 35 games against the league's other seven teams. Quad City will take on the Thunder seven times, joust with the Oilers and Rapid City Rush six times each, do battle with the expansion Denver Cutthroats five times, scrap with the Arizona Sundogs and Texas Brahmas four times apiece and duel with the Allen Americans three times.
The Mallards and Blaze will kick off their marathon season series on Friday, November 2 in Bloomington. The Blaze will make its first visit to the Quad Cities the following evening. On Sunday, November 4, the two teams will butt heads for the third time in three evenings and for the second time in 24 hours at the i wireless Center. The Mallards and Blaze will also see plenty of each other during the stretch run of the regular season- the two clubs will collide six times in the month of March alone- and will finish the campaign with a second cluster of three head-to-head meetings in 48 hours. Quad City will play host to Bloomington Friday, March 22 before visiting U.S. Cellular Coliseum the next night and returning home to close out the regular season against the Blaze on Sunday, March 24.
On Friday, November 30, the Mallards will travel to the Independence Events Center to kick off not only their season series with Missouri, but also a stretch of four consecutive head-to-head clashes with the Mavericks. The four-game duel will continue in the Quad Cities on Saturday, December 1 and Friday, December 7 before concluding in Independence on Saturday, December 8. The Mallards and Mavericks will also spend ample time in each other's company late in the campaign. The Flock and the Mavs will get together for home-and-home series on consecutive weekends in March: Friday, March 8 (in Moline) and Saturday, March 9 (Independence) and Saturday, March 16 (Independence) and Sunday, March 17 (Moline).
The Mallards will face off with the league's newest entry- the Cutthroats- for the first time when Denver visits Moline Friday, January 4. The Flock will make its first trip to Denver for a two-game set Friday, February 22 and Saturday, February 23. After not squaring off in either of the Mallards' first two CHL campaigns, Quad City and Texas will meet for the first time ever when the Mallards visit Fort Worth on Thanksgiving eve- Wednesday, November 21. The Brahmas will make their first i wireless Center appearance on Friday, January 18.
The Mallards will see ample action on and around holidays this season. While the Ducks will be idle on Turkey Day itself (November 22) this year, Thanksgiving week will still prove quite busy for the Flock. After their November 21 trip to Texas, the Mallards will travel to Wichita on Friday, November 23 and then head home for a date with Tulsa on Saturday, November 24.
Christmas will also bring only a brief respite for the Mallards, who will play four times in the final six days of 2012. The Mallards will host Missouri on Wednesday, December 26 and then hit the road for match-ups with Tulsa on December 28, Wichita on December 29 and Allen on New Year's Eve (Monday, December 31).
The Mallards this season are also slated to take the ice on St. Patrick's Day for the third year in a row. The Mavericks will try to spoil the party at the i wireless Center when they arrive to battle the Flock on Sunday, March 17.
Other schedule highlights include:
- The Mallards' two longest homestands this season will last four games each. The Flock will play four straight at the i wireless Center between Saturday, November 3 and Saturday, November 10 and again between Tuesday, February 12 and Tuesday, February 19.
- The Mallards' two longest road trips will both last five games. The first of those two swings will begin Saturday, December 8 in Missouri and will finish Saturday, December 15 in Rapid City. The Flock's other five-game trip will kick off on Friday night, February 22 in Denver and will wrap up Friday, March 1 in Missouri.
- For the first time since entering the CHL two years ago, the Mallards this season will play every other team in the league at least once on home ice and on the road.
- As was the case last season, the Mallards' lone sojourn to Arizona will be Quad City's longest single-stop road trip of the campaign. The Mallards will make the 3,134 mile round trip to visit the Sundogs for games on Friday, January 25 and Saturday, January 26.
- The Mallards will be at their busiest as the regular season winds to a close. Quad City will play 11 times in the final 17 days of the campaign.
- The Mallards will play 13 games in each of November, December, February and March; 10 in January; and 4 in October.
- For the second year in a row, the Mallards will play three games in three nights on eight occasions (including each of the final three weekends of the season): October 26, 27 and 28; November 2, 3 and 4; November 16, 17 and 18; December 7, 8 and 9; January 10, 11 and 12; March 8, 9 and 10; March 15, 16 and 17; and March 22, 23 and 24.
