Winston-Salem Dash News Release
WINSTON-SALEM, NC - A Hillcats throwing error in the bottom of the tenth inning allowed Winston-Salem to walk-off with a 4-3 victory over Lynchburg in the series finale at Ernie Shore Field on Friday night. With two outs and runners on first and second base, Lee Cruz laced a grounder that was snagged by a diving Tony Mansolino at third base. After hopping to his feet, Mansolino unleashed a wild throw to first that allowed Javier Colina to score from second as Winston-Salem took three of four from Lynchburg.
Lynchburg loaded the bases with no outs in the third inning against John Ely, but only managed a run on a sacrifice fly by Kent Sakamoto to take an early lead. The Warthogs responded with a pair of runs in their half of the frame to take a 2-1 lead. Adam Ricks led off with a single and scored on a triple by Paulo Orlando. Next, John Shelby III, who extended his hitting streak to 13 games, singled to bring Orlando across the plate.
The Hillcats wasted little time in regaining the lead in the fourth inning when Eddie Prasch laced a two-run double with two outs to give Lynchburg a 3-2 advantage. Winston-Salem manufactured the tying run in the sixth as Javier Colina singled to start the inning. He stole second, moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on a sacrifice fly by Lee Cruz to knot the game at three.
Both bullpens kept the game tied until the dramatic finish in the tenth. Warthog's reliever Steven Spurgeon tossed three shutout innings and Ryan Rote (2-0) worked the final two scoreless frames to earn the win. Ely allowed three runs in five innings with four walks and seven strikeouts, but did not figure in the decision. Lynchburg closer Adam Simon (0-1) allowed the winning run to take the loss.
The Warthogs will welcome the Kinston Indians to Winston-Salem for a four-game series in three days over the weekend at Ernie Shore Field. The opener is set for Friday with the first pitch scheduled for 7 p.m. The two teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday.
