WOODBRIDGE, Va.- With the rain pounding on the brim of his hat, Yunior Novoa pumped his fist as Edgardo Baez caught the final out sealing the 4-3 victory for the Nationals over Myrtle Beach on a soggy Thursday night. The win pushed the P-Nats to a series split and helped maintain the two game lead in the Northern Division over the Frederick Keys.
Potomac starter Craig Stammen threw five innings allowing three earned runs, the most in any of his three starts for the Nationals this season. The righty struck out five of the 21 hitters he faced earning a no-decision.
Myrtle Beach took control of the game against Stammen in the second inning with a two-run home run from Brandon Hicks scoring former Potomac National Brandon Powell. The long ball was Hicks' sixth of the year tying him for third place in the Carolina League.
The P-Nats responded with the first of three home runs on the night with a home run from Baez, his fifth of the season equaling the team lead and cutting the Pelicans lead in half.
After Phillip Britton connected for his first homer of the season in the fifth inning giving Myrtle Beach a 3-1 lead, the Nationals bats would be dormant for four innings before Brian Peacock ended the drought with his second home run of the season, and his first since a grand slam against Kinston on April 13th.
The long ball parade for the Nationals continued later in the seventh inning. After Michael Martinez singled to center field, Matt Rogelstad turned a 3-2 Pelicans advantage into a 4-3 Nationals lead.
Former Southern California Trojan, Jack Spradlin improved to 2-0 on the season with the win pitching two scoreless innings allowing two hits while striking out three.
Potomac's bullpen continued to put up zeros in the box score with Josh Wilkie getting out of a bases loaded jam in the eighth by striking out Britton.
Closer du jour Novoa came on in the ninth for a scoreless frame while striking out two and notching his third save of the season despite Concepcion Rodriguez's two-out single.
The Nationals will travel to Salem tomorrow to begin a six-game, seven-day road trip. Potomac is scheduled for a three-game series with the Avalanche who they lost two out of three against in the first series of the season back in April. Tomorrow's contest will feature Adrian Alaniz (4-0, 2.19) for the P-Nats opposite lefty David Qualben (1-5, 6.61).
