Clearwater Threshers News Release
DUNEDIN, Fla. - Mario Hollands made his first rehab appearance with the Clearwater Threshers on Monday night, but Clearwater was limited to just three hits in a 6-2 loss to the Dunedin Blue Jays at Florida Auto Exchange Stadium.
Tyler Viza started and worked the front five innings, as the right-hander was sattled with his first loss of the season. Viza (4-1) tossed five-plus, and was charged with five runs - three earned - on ten hits.
Hollands worked the eighth for Clearwater (19-11) after joining the roster on Monday, as the left-hander recovers from Tommy John Surgery. The 27-year-old, who pitched 50 games in relief for the Philadelphia Phillies in 2014, missed all of last year after undergoing surgery in April of 2015.
He allowed one run in his inning of work, as Ryan McBroom homered after a ten-pitch at-bat. Hollands then struck out LB Dantzler and DJ Davis to end the inning. Hollands threw 20 pitches, 15 for strikes.
Dunedin (14-16) led throughout, after Richard Urena lifted his third home run of the season out to right-centerfield in the first inning.
The Blue Jays grabbed an unearned run in the third, before Mike Reeves' RBI single to left made it 3-0 in the fourth inning.
The Threshers were held hitless until the fifth.
Justin Shafer started and did not factor in the decision after going 4.1 innings. He did not permit a base hit, but walked four batters and hit two. Shafer gave way to Carlos Ramirez with two men on and one down in the fifth inning.
Ramirez (2-0) induced a popout off the bat of Cord Sandberg, but Carlos Tocci sent a soft grounder to the hole at short to plate Samuel Hiciano with an infield single, resulting in the first hit and run of the ballgame for Clearwater.
Dunedin gained some distance in the sixth.
DJ Davis pulled a grounder that took a bad hop over first baseman Kyle Martin and continued up the right field line for a triple to start the inning against Viza. Following a walk to Dickie Joe Thon, Reeves blooped a soft single into left to score Davis.
Ulises Joaquin entered in relief of Viza, and struck out David Harris on three pitches before inducing a groundball to short from Jonathan Davis. Scott Kingery's relay to first was wild, permitting Thon to cross with the Blue Jays' fifth run.
The Threshers utilized a pair of walks and a two-out error on Thon to plate Malquin Canelo with their second run in the ninth, before Jose Fernandez got Kyle Martin to pop to short to end the contest.
Clearwater will look to regroup as the series swings over to Bright House Field on Dollar Tuesday, presented by Regions Bank. First pitch is set for 7 p.m. with Will Morris (2-1) on the hill, opposed by Conner Greene (2-2). The game can be heard live on the Threshers Broadcast Network starting at 6:45 p.m.
