Fort Myers Mighty Mussels News Release

BRADENTON, Fla. - The Fort Myers Miracle jumped out to a 9-0 lead after five innings, and then held off a late Bradenton rally to defeat the Marauders 10-6 on Monday evening at McKechnie Field.

The Miracle wasted little time getting started by scoring twice in the very first inning. Tanner Witt walked to start the game, and then stole second base. Edgar Corcino followed with a double to right field to score Witt with the first run of the game. Corcino went to third on a single by Chris Paul, and then scored on Tanner Vavra's double-play ground ball.

Fort Myers doubled their advantage in the fourth inning. Logan Wade led off by reaching on an infield single, stole second one out later, and took third on a single by Max Murphy. Kevin Garcia then grounded out to first, scoring Wade to increase the Miracle lead to 3-0. Chad Christensen followed by reaching on a throwing error by Bradenton pitcher Alex McRae, scoring Murphy from second in the process, and the Miracle's advantage was 4-0.

Fort Myers upped their lead to 9-0 with a five-run fifth. Facing relief pitcher Jose Regalado, Corcino, Paul, and Vavra each singled to start the inning and load the bases. Wade then drove home two runs with a double to right field. One out later, Murphy and Garcia were both hit by pitches, with the second of those scoring Vavra from third. Christensen drove in the fourth run of the inning with a single to left to score Wade, and Witt followed with a bases loaded walk to push across the fifth run of the inning.

Tanner Vavra hit a solo homerun, his third of the season, leading off the sixth inning, to increase the Miracle lead to 10-0.

The host Marauders were kept off the board until the eighth when they finally broke through against the Miracle bullpen, scoring four times thanks to three doubles. The rally continued in the ninth, as Bradenton added two more runs to close to within 10-6, but they could get no closer.

The Miracle's fourteen-hit offensive attack was led by Vavra and Wade with three hits each, while Corcino and Paul added two apiece. Every batter in the starting lineup had at least one hit except for Witt.

Stephen Gonsalves (4-1) tossed 6 1/3 scoreless innings to earn the victory, allowing just two hits while walking four and striking out eight.

The Miracle (18-13), who remain in first place by a half-game in the Florida State League's South Division, will return home to Hammond Stadium on Tuesday night for a 7:05 p.m. first pitch against the same Bradenton Maurauders (14-16). Fans can listen to the broadcast with the "Voice of the Miracle" Brice Zimmerman at http://www.miraclebaseball.com/. The MiracleBaseball.com pregame show begins at 6:35 p.m.
