Palm Beach Cardinals News Release
Jupiter, FL - The Palm Beach Cardinals (14-18) had numerous opportunities to score early against the Charlotte Stone Crabs (17-14), but they would not cash them in and end up losing 5-2.
The Rundown
Blake McKnight (0-4) was given the ball to start the game for the Cardinals on the hill. He would last 5.2 innings, giving up six hits, three runs (two earned), walking four batters and striking out two. He would also be the losing pitcher of record on the night.
Charlotte would strike first in the game in the second inning. Grant Kay would hit a one out double to right and would get to third on a Jace Conrad ground out. Cristian Toribio would then draw a two out walk from McKnight. Thomas Milone would then put a ball in play that would go roll right at Darren Seferina, who would bobble it and all Kay to come in from third giving Charlotte a 1-0 lead.
In the bottom of the second the Cardinals would cook up something early as Casey Grayson would start with a single. Blake Drake would then hit a ground rule double down the left field line that would get stuck under the bullpen bench not allowing Grayson to get home. Both players would then be stranded their as the next three batters were put down by Charlotte started, Brent Honeywell (4-0).
Charlotte would take on two more in the third and it would prove to be enough to win. McKnight would load the bases on the first three batters that he faced as he walked Riley Unroe and gave up back to back single to Alec Sole and Cade Gotta. Nick Ciuffo would then come to the plate and single in two runs to make it 3-0. McKnight would then get out of the inning with a fly out and a double play.
The Cardinals would look to get back in the game as Drake got a single with his second hit of the day in the fourth inning. Orlando Olivera would then come up to the plate and smash a 1-2 pitch off Honeywell for a two run home run, his first of the season, to make the score 3-2 still in favor of the Stone Crabs.
McKnight would cruise until the sixth when he would give up a single and a walk with two out. The Cardinals would then bring in just promoted Chandler Hawkins. He would get out of the sixth without giving up any runs.
The Cardinals would then get their last opportunity to get back in the game in the bottom of the sixth inning when Jordan Harrison would relieve Brent Honeywell. Casey Turgeon would lead off the inning with a double down the right field line and Danny Diekroeger would follow it up with a bloop single to center. Turgeon was unable to advance on the hit as he was unsure if it was going to be caught or not by the center fielder, this would prove to be costly later in the inning. Casey Grayson would strike out swinging and Blake Drake would pop it straight up to second base inducing the infield fly rule. Orlando Olivera would then get his second hit of the day on a single to right field, but Turgeon would be thrown out at home by right fielder, Conrad, to end the inning.
Charlotte would then extend their lead in the seventh as Hawkins would give up a two run home run to the Designated Hitter, Cade Gotta. This would be enough for Charlotte as Mike Franco would come into the game and get a three inning save giving up only a Blake Drake double in the ninth and nothing more. The Cardinals would fall once again to Charlotte by a final of 5-2.
