Clearwater Threshers News Release

CLEARWATER: The Clearwater Threshers failed to put up any runs in their home opener and fell 2-0 to the visiting Dunedin Blue Jays on Friday despite a terrific performance from starter Perci Garner.

The Threshers (0-2) got a fantastic effort from Garner, who received a no-decision after throwing six near-perfect innings. Neither team was able to crack the scoreboard until the top of the tenth inning, when Dunedin (2-0) finally broke through.

Garner and Blue Jays starter Scott Copeland held both offenses in check through the first six innings. In the top of the seventh, Dunedin worked back-to-back walks off Threshers reliever Colby Shreve without any outs recorded. Shreve, however, was able to induce a popout from Andy Burns and got Gabe Jacobo to ground into a 6-4-3 double play started by a tremendous diving effort from shortstop Jonathan Roof.

Clearwater threatened with two outs in the bottom of the seventh, as left fielder Aaron Altherrhammered a double into the right-field corner. Designated hitter Harold Martinez slashed a ground ball to third that looked destined for the outfield. But Burns dove to his left for the stop, and fired across to first to get Martinez out and end the inning.

In the top of the 10th, Clearwater reliever Brandon Erbe(0-1)gave up a one-out single to Jacobo, and then issued a walk to Kevin Patterson to put runners on first and second. Marcus Knecht singled home Jacoboand put runners on the corners for Michael Crouse, who doubled to right. Patterson scored on the play, giving Dunedin their final 2-0 lead. Clearwater went down in order in the bottom of the frame.
