Clearwater Threshers News Release

DUNEDIN - The Clearwater Threshers rode four late runs to a 7-3 defeat of the crosstown Dunedin Blue Jays at Florida Auto Exchange Stadium in front of 1,396 fans Saturday night.

The Threshers (1-2) picked up their first win of the season behind a bases-loaded double from third baseman Maikel Franco that broke a 3-3 deadlock and gave Clearwater the lead over host Dunedin (2-1). The Threshers got five innings of scoreless relief from Gabriel Arias (1-0) and Luis Paulino to stay in the game and give the offense a chance for the breakthrough.

Dunedin opened the scoring in the bottom of the second. Michael Crouse drew a one-out walk and stole second against Clearwater starter Ethan Stewart. Oliver Dominguez lined a shot over Threshers center fielder Kyrell Hudson that turned into an RBI triple. After Aaron Mu=B1oz struck out looking, Jonathan Jones doubled home Dominguez, and came in on an RBI single from Jon Berti that made the score 3-0 in favor of Dunedin.

Clearwater evened the score in the top of the fourth. With one out, second baseman Jonathan Roof lined a single to right field off Dunedin starter Aaron Sanchez, and moved to second when Franco drew a walk. Designated hitter Chris Serritella plated Roof on a double that one-hopped off the left field wall. Right fielder Cameron Perkins hit a hard ground ball deep in the hole that proved too long a run for shortstop Peter Mooney; the single brought home Franco and moved Serritella to third base. First baseman Brock Stassi hit a groundout to second base that gave Serriteela enough time to come home and score, tying the ballgame at 3-3.

The Threshers took their first lead of the season in the top of the eighth inning. Shortstop Jose Mojicaslashed a one-out single through the right side off Blue Jays reliever Shawn Griffith (0-1), and moved to second on a similar single from Hudson. Roof worked a walk to load the bases up for Franco. The 20-year-old didn't disappoint, rocketing a double into the left-center field gap to clear the bases and make it 6-3 Threshers.

Clearwater gave themselves a bit more breathing room in the top of the ninth. With one out, left fielder Aaron Altherrsingled to right field off reliever Tony Davis, and advanced to second on a walk by Logan Moore. Altherr swiped third base with Mojica at the plate, and came home on the shortstop's RBI single through the right side to make the score 7-3.

Stewart got a no-decision, allowing three runs on six hits and three walks over four innings. He struck out three and hit one batter. Arias earned the win with three shutout innings of relief, giving up three hits and a walk against one strikeout. Paulino picked up his first save with two shutout frames of his own, striking out three and allowing a hit and a walk.

Sanchez gave up three runs on three hits and a walk over five innings, whiffing four. Dustin Antolin provided two spotless innings of relief with four strikeouts. Griffith took the loss, with three runs allowed on three hits and a walk in just a third of an inning. Davis gave up a run on two hits and a walk in 1.2 innings, striking out four.
