Fort Myers Mighty Mussels News Release
PORT CHARLOTTE, FL - The Fort Myers Miracle matched the best start in team history at 9-0 after holding on to beat the Charlotte Stone Crabs, 8-7, at Charlotte Sports Park on Saturday evening.
Fort Myers built two five run leads, but the Stone Crabs pulled to a one-run deficit with four runs of Miracle reliever Miguel Munoz in the eighth inning. After two were out, Munoz gave up a RBI double to Richie Shaffer, a run-scoring single to Kyeong Kang and a two-run homer to Alejandro Segovia.
In the ninth, Corey Williams retired the Crabs in order to quell the rally and nail down the ninth consecutive win for the Miracle to begin the season. The save was Williams' third of the season.
The Miracle jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning with back-to-back sacrifice flies from Miguel Sano and Michael Gonzales. In the third, Fort Myers added three more on one impressive swing from Kennys Vargas. With two on and one out, Vargas launched a 1-0 pitch from Charlotte starter Roberto Gomez halfway up the batter's eye in dead center field. The wall at Charlotte Sports Park in center field is 414 feet from home plate.
Fort Myers starter Madison Boer was cruising with a five run lead through three innings, but ran into trouble in the fourth. Boer allowed three runs to score on four hits including back-to-back RBI doubles from Kang and Segovia followed by a run-scoring base hit from Steven Tinoco.
Boer regrouped to face the minimum in the next two innings, getting a double play in the fifth and striking out two in a 1-2-3 sixth. Boer (1-0) picked up the win in his first start after following Twins left-hander Scott Diamond on April 7 in Bradenton, Fla.
In the sixth, the Miracle added a couple of insurance runs that would turn out to be very important. Lance Ray led off with a double into left center field and advanced home on a one-out single from Kyle Knudson. Two batters later, Angel Morales doubled into the left field corner to plate Knudson and push the Fort Myers lead to 8-3.
Morales finished the game 3-for-5 with two doubles. Eddie Rosario went 2-for-5 to extend his hitting streak to eight games. Sano tallied a double in the ninth inning to move his hitting streak to seven.
Fort Myers (9-0) returns to Hammond Stadium tomorrow to finish the three game series with Charlotte (4-5) at 2:35 p.m. The Miracle will be bidding for a team record tenth consecutive win to start a season. Fans can listen to all the play-by-play action on www.miraclebaseball.com with the "Voice of the Miracle" Brice Zimmerman and Adam MacDonald. The Square 1 Burgers & Bar pregame show begins at 2:15 p.m.
