Elmira Jackals News Release
The Elmira Jackals recorded two wins over the Reading Royals on Friday and Saturday and added one against the Johnstown Chiefs on Sunday, increasing their lead in the American East Division to 11 points.
On Friday night, the Jackals scored eight goals in a game for the fourth time this season, taking down the Royals 8-3 at First Arena. The Jackals broke open a 2-1 score in the second period with six goals in the middle frame, a team high for the Jackals in ECHL play. Jarrett Konkle achieved a hat trick for the Jackals, snapping an eight-game goal drought in the process.
Saturday's game was a tight battle right down to the wire. Tyler Donati scored the go-ahead goal for the Jackals with 3:03 left in the third period, snapping a 1-1 tie, and then Chris Korchinski scored what proved to be the game winner with 1:11 left, and the Jackals held on for the victory, 3-2.
To end the weekend, Elmira shut down Johnstown on Sunday, taking a 5-0 lead before the Chiefs got on the scoreboard. The Jackals went on to win 7-2, improving their record to 6-0 against the Chiefs this season.
DONATI TWINS ARE ON FIRE
With a hat trick on Sunday, the first of his career, Tyler Donati extended his goal-scoring streak to nine games, an ECHL high in 2009-2010 and the best since Utah's Tom May scored goals in ten straight games last season. In doing so, he extended his current league-leading point scoring streak to 14 games. One game behind him is twin brother Justin Donati, with points in each of his last 13 games.
Tyler is atop the league with 85 points, while Justin is second with 81 points and leads all rookie scorers. On Sunday, Tyler set a new Jackals record in ECHL play for points in a season when he scored his 84th point. Benoit Doucet, the previous record holder, recorded 83 in the Jackals inaugural ECHL season of 2007-2008.
The all-time Jackals record for points in one season, set by Randy Murphy in 2002-2003, is 93.
Last season, Kevin Baker of Florida led the ECHL with 102 points, while Cincinnati's David Desharnais topped the league with 106 in 2007-2008.
The most points scored in a season in ECHL history is 161 by Trevor Jobe for Nashville in 1992-1993.
DRAMATIC TURNAROUND
Past: One month ago today, the Jackals entered their game in Toledo with a record of 18-17-2-2 and eight points back of the Royals for the top spot in the East Division.
Present: Today, the Jackals record is 30-18-3-2, taking points in 13 of the last 14 games and winning 12 of those games, and have caused a 19-point swing in the division.
During this 14 game stretch, the Jackals have scored twice as many goals as their opponents, notching 76 while allowing 38.
