PENSACOLA, Fla. - Former Pensacola Ice Flyers defenseman and three-time Southern Professional Hockey League President's Cup champion, Steve Bergin, has been named Assistant Coach of the ECHL's South Carolina Stingrays, the AA affiliate of the National Hockey League's Washington Capitals and the American Hockey League's Hershey Bears.
"I'm beyond excited for this next chapter in my hockey career and extremely grateful to the Stingrays organization for this opportunity. I'll miss playing but transitioning into a coaching career lets me stay involved in the game I've known my entire life," said Bergin.
Bergin, a native of Groton, Mass., played five seasons, his entire professional career, with the Ice Flyers. He was the only player to appear in all four of the franchise's appearances in the President's Cup Final and one of just three players to be a part of all three of the Ice Flyers' President's Cup Championship teams.
Bergin continued, "my time playing in Pensacola has been the best years of my life. I was able to meet some of my best friends, play in front of great fans every night, and was fortunate enough to play on some amazing teams that won championships. This opportunity wouldn't be possible without the time I spent there."
In his five seasons, Bergin appeared in 217 regular season games and had 10 goals, 54 assists, 93 penalty minutes (PIM), and a +53 plus/minus rating. He holds the franchise record for games played and his +53 is tied with Corey Banfield for second all-time in team history. In 30 career playoff games, Bergin scored three goals while adding nine assists, 4 PIM, and a +16.
"I'd like to give a special thanks to coaches Rod Aldoff and Gary Graham, owner Greg Harris, team chaplain David Trombly and all the great teammates that made my stay in Pensacola such an amazing experience," Bergin concluded.
