New Jersey Jackals News Release
Little Falls, NJ - The Sussex Skyhawks broke a scoreless tie with three runs in the fifth inning en route to a 3-1 win over the New Jersey Jackals on Wednesday night at Yogi Berra Stadium.
Jackals starter Isaac Pavlik and Sussex's Gary Galvez were locked in a pitchers duel when Skyhawks 2B Chris Brown led off the fifth inning with a walk. Brown scored on an RBI single on C Yohanny Valera to make it 1-0. Valera later came plateward on a Ron Perodin ground out before a run-scoring double off the bat of SS Kevin Rios gave Sussex a 3-0 advantage at the game's midway point. The Jackals finally got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the ninth when a one-out RBI double by 1B Juan Tejeda drove home 2B Marcus Sanders, who had led off with a walk. However, Skyhawks closer Matt Petrusek struck out three batters to escape the jam and earn his 22nd save of the season.
Galvez (5-5) turned in his best start of the season, hurling eight innings of four-hit shutout baseball while striking out seven batters. For the Jackals, Pavlik (8-6) took the loss despite turning in eight solid innings and allowing three runs on eight hits with two walks and two strikeouts.
