Brockton Rox News Release

Brockton, MA (August 27, 2008) - RHP John Kelly turned in a memorable performance on Wednesday night as the Leominster, MA native struck out twelve batters and allowed just three balls to leave the infield in a 4-2 win for the Rox over the Ottawa Rapidz.

Kelly had the Rox first shutout of the season in hand with two outs in the top of the ninth inning, but Rapidz's first baseman Jabe Bergeron drove a 3-2 pitch over the right field wall for a two-run home run. It was only the third baseball to leave the infield of the 129 thrown by Kelly on the night. He was completely dominant over Ottawa, twice striking out the side in order and surrendering four hits (only two of which reached the Rox outfielders).

Kelly further secured his place as the Rox all-time wins (24) and strikeouts (306) leader and also re-captured the league's strikeout lead by fanning a season-high 12.

The offense for the night for both teams came via three, two-run home runs. OF Jud Thigpen hit his 15th home run of the season in the second inning which gave the Rox a 2-0 lead. RF Dennis Abreu followed with a two-run shot of his own in the fifth inning to make the advantage 4-0.

Thigpen's home run set two Rox single-season records. 15 home runs stands along atop the Rox record books, and he recorded his 64th and 65th RBI of the year; also a new Rox record.

The Rox and Rapidz finish the four-game series on Thursday night at Campanelli Stadium. RHP Greg Bunn (1-2, 7.36 ERA) takes the ball for Brockton against Ottawa's LHP Jacob Ramos (0-1, 5.22 ERA). First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM.
