Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release
CEDAR RAPIDS, IOWA - The Kernels came from behind with three runs in the eighth inning to down Peoria 4-2 on Saturday night. Jonatan Hinojosa hit the go-ahead two-run triple to deep center and collected three total RBIs to help Cedar Rapids win their fifth straight game. Engelb Vielma knocked him in during the next at-bat in the eighth to make it a two-score game late in the contest. Jake Reed took the win and tossed two scoreless, hitless frames in the eighth and ninth to secure the comeback victory.
Hinojosa drove in the Kernels' first run of the game in the bottom of the third with a two-out RBI single to right field. Ryan Walker, who doubled in the previous at-bat, scored to make it a 1-0 advantage.
The Chiefs responded immediately in the top of the fourth when Justin Ringo drove in Carson Kelly on a two-out single to right. Kelly doubled earlier in the frame and scored to tie it at 1-1.
Lewis Thorpe exited in the top of the sixth after 5 1/3 innings on the mound with one out and a man on. After allowing a lead-off double to Richy Pedroza and recording a fly out, Thorpe left the mound with the score still tied. Chris Mazza took over and struck out the first batter he faced, Carson Kelly, to tally the second out. Justin Ringo then pushed a double fair down the line in left to bring in Pedroza for the Chiefs' first lead, 2-1. Mazza finished after 1 2/3 scoreless innings innings.
Thorpe took the no-decision after the comeback and allowed five hits, two walks and four strikeouts during his 13th start for Cedar Rapids.
Arturo Reyes took the no-decision and left the mound with his team in the lead after 6 1/3 innings of work. Reyes surrendered one run on five hits while walking two and striking out six in the start.
Tyler Bray (0-1) took the loss and made his Peoria-debut with one out and a man on in the seventh. Bray recorded the final two outs and escaped the seventh, but ran into trouble quickly in the eighth. After walking Logan Wade and surrendering a one-out single into center field by Ryan Walker, Bray left the game with the go-ahead run on first base.
Kyle Barraclough replaced Bray with runners on the corners in the bottom of the eighth and gave up the fatal blow to Jonatan Hinojosa, a triple to deep centerfield. Hinojosa drove in Walker and Wade on the drive to the center field wall to give the Kernels the 3-2 lead. Engelb Vielma then singled in Hinojosa in the next at-bat to add an insurance run and push the mark to 4-2.
Jake Reed (3-0) picked up the win in relief with two scoreless, hitless frames in the eighth and ninth. Reed secured the 4-2 victory by striking out the side in the ninth.
