
Fish Slams Bandits to 4th Straight Loss

DAVENPORT, Iowa - With one swing in the top of the seventh inning Friday night, Burlington right fielder Mike Fish turned a 3-2 Quad Cities lead into a 6-3 Burlington advantage with a grand slam, and the Bees held on for a 6-5 win that send the River Bandits to their fourth straight loss in front of 6,386 at Modern Woodmen Park.
For the sixth straight game, the River Bandits (25-28 second half, 60-62 overall) held a lead, but for a fourth straight game, their opponent posted a four-run inning to take away the lead for good. Quad Cities has lost 12 of its last 16 games to fall two games below .500 overall for the first time since July 19. Burlington (25-28, 63-59) tied the River Bandits for fifth place in the Western Division second-half race.
The Bees took the lead in the second inning against River Bandits left-hander Blaine Sims. Designated hitter Eric Aguilera drew a leadoff walk and scored after a wild pitch, passed ball and RBI single by catcher Cambric Moye. In the third, center fielder Bo Way drew a leadoff walk, stole second base and scored on Aguilera's one-out single. Sims allowed two earned runs on two hits and four walks with three strikeouts in four innings. Bees right-hander Alex Blackford worked around a pair of first-inning singles by getting a ground-ball double play and struck out four batters the first time through the order. In the fourth inning, left fielder Bobby Boyd hit a leadoff infield single, stole second base and reached third base on a throwing error by Moye. A wild pitch scored Boyd to cut the deficit to 2-1.
Blackford posted a career-high 10 strikeouts and held the 2-1 lead until two outs in the sixth inning. First baseman A.J. Reed and third baseman J.D. Davis drew consecutive walks. Right-hander Grant Gordon (2-2) entered to face right fielder Marc Wik, who lifted a fly ball to the warning track in left field, where the ball went off Trevor Gretzky's glove, allowing Reed and Davis to score for a 3-2 Quad Cities lead. All three unearned runs were charged to Blackford, who allowed four hits and three walks in 5 2/3 innings.
With a 3-2 lead entering the seventh inning, River Bandits left-hander Chris Lee (6-6) began his third inning in relief of Sims. With one out, Bees second baseman Kody Eaves reached on an infield single that sent River Bandits second baseman Jose Fernandez far toward the middle on a ground ball. Third baseman Zach Houchins singled through the left side of the infield, and Aguilera chopped a ball to Fernandez, who dropped the ball, allowing the Bees to load the bases with one out. Fish then hit his ninth home run of the season - and third against Quad Cities - by sending a 1-1 pitch from Lee to the Modern Woodmen Berm in left-center field.
Gordon held the 6-3 lead through the seventh inning and pitched 1 1/3 innings while allowing a walk and striking out one. Left-hander Greg Mahle began the eighth inning by walking McDonald and hitting Reed with a pitch, before Davis hit into a double play. McDonald scored on a wild pitch to make it 6-4. In the ninth inning, shortstop Thomas Lindauer hit a one-out double, and center fielder James Ramsay singled to extend his career-high nine-game hitting streak before stealing second base to post a third straight two-steal game. Boyd grounded out to score Lindauer, but McDonald struck out swinging with the tying run at second base, as Mahle notched his first save.
Quad Cities continues its series against Burlington at 6 p.m. Satur day. In a matchup of 2014 SiriusXM All-Star Futures Game pitchers, River Bandits righ t-hander Michael Feliz ( 8 -4) is scheduled to face Bees right-hander Victor Alcantara ( 6 - 6 ) for the second time in 12 days.
