Traverse City Beach Bums News Release
FLORENCE, KY - The Traverse City Beach Bums scored early and often in a 12-5 win over the Florence Freedom at Champion Window Field in the first meeting of the season between the two clubs.
The Beach Bums wasted no time following the off-day, plating two first inning runs off of Freedom starting pitcher Craig Trent. After retiring the leadoff man, Trent hit Steve Young with a pitch and issued a four-pitch walk to Curtis Ledbetter. Brad Vericker was able to put the Beach Bums in front with an RBI single into center to score Young. With two away Kyle Bradburry singled through the right side to score Ledbetter and extend the advantage to 2-0.
Three more runs crossed for the Beach Bums against Trent in the third. Curtis Ledbetter began the inning with a single to extend his Beach Bums best hitting streak to 15 games. Brad Vericker followed with a walk. With two away Sam Orr drove in the first run of the inning on a first pitch single through the right side and advanced to second on the throw. Justin Holmes added to the lead with a single that scored both Orr and Vericker and gave the Beach Bums a 5-0 lead.
After Florence plated an unearned run in the bottom of the fourth, the Beach Bums used the long ball to open a 9-1 advantage. Aaron Garza started the inning with his team leading seventh homer, clearing the fence in left. With a pair of runners on base Justin Holmes also went deep, hitting his fourth of the season over the left field wall.
Florence answered with four runs in the bottom of the frame, pulling within 9-5 and chasing Ryan Gehring from the game. Beau Blacken contributed the big hit, a two-RBI double. Gehring earned the win, working five innings and allowing five runs (four earned). He struck out four. The Beach Bums bullpen worked four scoreless frames to preserve the win as Brett Bostelman, Jeff Williams, Matt Dillard, and Nick Pepper all threw scoreless frames.
The Beach Bums contributed to the final margin with three more runs in the top of the sixth, again using the homer. Aaron Garza drew a leadoff walk and Sam Orr got into the homerun act with a two-run shot over the wall in right. Justin Holmes doubled and scored later in the inning when Zack Kalter did the same.
Traverse City finished with 16 hits in the game as every member of the Beach Bums starting lineup recorded a hit and every reserve entered the game. Justin Holmes and Sam Orr each finished a triple shy of the cycle. Holmes was chosen as the Player of the Game after driving in a Beach Bums season best five runs. Orr scored three runs. Aaron Garza and Zack Kalter also finished the game with two hits.
The Beach Bums will continue the series with Florence tomorrow night in a 7:05 contest. RHP David Nathanson (3-2, 3.91) starts for the Beach Bums while LHP Scott Fogelson (5-6, 4.55) starts for Florence. Fogelson is a former member of the Kalamazoo Kings who is 0-3 against the Beach Bums this season. Tim Calderwood will broadcast the game on The Fox FM beginning with the Beach Bums On Deck Show at 6:45 pm.
