Odessa Jackalopes News Release
AMARILLO, TX - Coming into action on Friday in Amarillo, the Jacks trailed the Bulls by eight points in the NAHL South Division standings. With the first of four straight against their arch rivals on Friday in Amarillo, the Jacks were looking to make up some ground on the defending regular season division champions. Greg Gatto chose Tanner Creel to make his ninth straight appearance in goal for the Jackalopes, meanwhile, the Bulls sent out Anton Martinssson, who was 2-0 in his previous two starts against the Jacks this season.
The Jacks came out of the gates and pressured the Bulls net and defense with multiple point blank chances in the first ten minutes. When Martinsson weathered the storm, the spotlight shifted to the Jacks end, where Tanner Creel was tested in the second half of the first period. The shots came out even after the first, with the goaltending winning out. The Jacks and Bulls were scoreless after one period.
The Bulls came out hard in the second period. Former first round draft pick of the Jackalopes in 2013, Brady Crabtree put Amarillo out front 58 seconds into the period. Off a shot from defenseman Tristan Rostagno that was blocked, the puck came on the stick of Brady Crabtree. At 6:31, the Bulls capitalized on turnover by the Jacks. Joey DiBenedetto slid a nice pass across to Charlie Combs on the right wing, who beat Creel to make 2-0. After killing off a 5:00 minute major, the Jacks got an illegal substitution penalty. Luke Novak finished a nice pass from Cody Gylling. The Bulls outshot the Jacks 19-5 in the second, and lead 3-0 after two.
The Jacks dominated the third period and at 14:47 Razmuz Waxin-Engback finally solved Anton Martinsson. The play developed on a play from Lane Valimont from the left wing. Valimont worked his way around the goal and found Waxin-Engback standing off the right side of the goal. Will Harrison iced the game with an empty-net goal 18:41 with the Jacks trying to mount a late comeback.
The Jacks will try to split the series in Amarillo tomorrow night at 7:05 against the Bulls. The voice of the Jacks, Joey Battaino has the call at 6:50 on Classic Rock 102.1 FM KFZX and FASTHockey.com
