Bruins Outwork Chill in Road Victory
January 16, 2015 - North American Hockey League (NAHL)
Austin Bruins News Release
The Coulee Region Chill (20-10-6) saw more traffic in front of their net Friday than a Los Angeles freeway. That s thanks to the hard work of the Austin Bruins (19-9-10), who relentlessly peppered the Chill to the tune of 52 shots en route to a 4-1 win at the Green Island Ice Arena in Lacrosse.
Austin quickly jumped out to a 1-0 lead when Tony Uglem (Moorhead, MN) banged in a rebound 51 seconds into the game. Bruins draft pick Alex Jasiek (St. Louis, MO), in his first game since joining the team from the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders of the USHL, set up the play by crashing the net on his first shift and picked up an assist on the goal. Rookie goalie Evan Smith (Parker, CO) made his fourth start of the season and stopped 13 Chill shots in the period.
The Bruins dominated the play in the second period, outshooting Coulee Region 21-8. Austin s aggressive attack started to get under the skin of Chill goaltender Adam Carlson (Edina, MN - Mercyhurst), who allowed several rebounds in the frame after a mostly clean opening period.
Carlson kicked the net off right before an apparent Bruins goal was waved off, leading to a delay of game penalty. On the ensuing Austin power-play, Derek Olmschenk (Lino Lakes, MN) jammed home a rebound for his first-career goal to make it 2-0 at 2:12 of the second. Then captain Brian Bachnak (Riverview, MI) put away a second chance at 14:28 for his seventh goal of the season to give the Bruins a 3-0 lead after two.
The Chill scored its only goal at the conclusion of a 5-on-3 penalty kill, when Eddie Matsushima (Verona, WI) hopped out of the penalty box and caught a pass in stride on a breakaway, before beating Smith five-hole to make it 3-1. Off of a Coulee Region turnover in the final minutes, Austin s Jacob Kullberg (Kallered, Sweden) added an insurance goal from the doorstep at 18:29 of the third.
Smith stopped 34 shots for his third win in four career starts. Carlson was forced to make 48 saved in a losing effort.
The two teams will play their final game of the season series Saturday night in Austin at Riverside Arena at 7:05pm.
