Springfield Cardinals News Release

The red-hot Frisco RoughRiders extended their winning streak to five straight, ending Springfield's along the way, with a 10-4 win over the Cardinals on Thursday night at Dr. Pepper Ballpark in Frisco, Texas.

Reigning Texas League Pitcher of the Week Ryan Kulik was roughed up early, giving up three runs before he could record an out and extend his 16 1/3 inning scoreless streak.

Kulik was reached for three runs in the first inning, just four batters into the game. Tim Smith had an RBI double ahead of Mitch Moreland's two-run single, as the Riders took a 3-0 advantage.

Adam Fox homered to open the bottom of the second, as the Riders went up 4-0.

Springfield rallied to eventually tie the game. They started to chip away in the third, when Mike Folli tripled and scored on Jim Rapoport's RBI groundout, making it 4-1.

Shane Peterson doubled and scored on Tyler Henley's double in the fourth, making it a two-run game at 4-2.

Peterson delivered a two-run single in the fifth against Frisco starter and eventual winner Blake Beavan (1-2), tying the game at 4-4.

Kulik had settled in, but couldn't keep the game tied, as Frisco chased him in the bottom of the fifth. Back-to-back one-out doubles by Johnny Whittleman and Manny Pina gave Frisco the lead for good at 5-4. After Kulik gave up a single to Fox, he was lifted in favor of Sam Freeman. Freeman allowed an RBI single to Marcus Lemon and an RBI double to Craig Gentry, as Frisco took a 7-4 lead.

Fox homered again in the seventh, taking Brian Broderick deep to left, his seventh of the year, making it 8-4.

The RoughRiders capped the scoring with a two-run homer off the bat of Chad Tracy, as he took Eddie Degerman deep in the eighth, giving the RoughRiders a 10-4 lead.

Frisco's bullpen retired all 12 men they faced over four perfect innings.

Kulik (3-6) took the loss, allowing seven runs on nine hits over 4 1/3 innings.

Springfield is now 7-6 in the second half and 45-38 overall. Right-hander Scott Gorgen (0-0) will make his Double-A debut on Friday night, taking on Frisco's Omar Poveda (7-3) at 7:00pm.

The Redbirds return to Hammons Field on Thursday, July 16th, opening a four-game series against the Double-A affiliate of the Kansas City Royals, the Northwest Arkansas Naturals.
