Corpus Christi Hooks News Release
(TULSA, Okla.) - Behind the pitching of Mitch Talbot and the hitting of J.R. House, Jonny Ash and others, the Hooks carried a 4-2 lead into the bottom of the sixth Friday night at Tulsa. Enter the ghost of Rod Serling, and the rest of the evening was a twilight zone of horrors for Corpus Christi, as the home standing Drillers rallied for a 10-4 win.
The fateful bottom of the sixth started with a ground rule double by Joe Koshansky off Hooks' reliever Blake Allen (4-1). A ground ball out moved Koshansky to third. The next batter, Jud Thigpen, hit a routine ground ball to shortstop Ben Zobrist, which scored Koshansky easily to bring the Drillers to within a run at 4-3. But on the play, Zobrist's throw bounced past first baseman Derek Nicholson, and Thigpen reached second on the error.
That brought Christian Colonel to the plate, and Allen got him to pop one up near first base. Nicholson drifted into foul ground to make the catch, but the wind blew the ball back into fair territory, where Ash, the second baseman, was poised to make the play. The wind also blew the ball away from Ash, and the ball landed for a single, which moved Thigpen to third.
Matt Macri followed with a sacrifice fly to deep right, and the game was knotted at 4-4. Joe Gaetti, a right-handed hitter, was summoned to pinch hit for reliever Jentry Beckstead (3-1). The Hooks countered the move by bringing in right-handed reliever Monte Mansfield. The result? Gaetti belted a two-run homer to left, and the Drillers had their first lead of the night at 6-4.
Another error and balk in the seventh opened the door to two more unearned runs for Tulsa. The Drillers then took advantage of two walks to score twice in the eighth for the final margin of victory.
On a positive note, House went 4-for-4 with three RBI's to extend his current hitting streak to 10 games. Ash, in just his second game back after a three-week hiatus on the disabled list, went 4-for-5 for his first four-hit game of the season. Zobrist, who turned 25 on Friday, had a 2-for-4 night that included a double and two runs. And Josh Bonifay clubbed his eighth homer of the season, a solo shot in the fourth inning.
Chance Douglass (3-1, 4.70) will be on the bump for the Hooks in Saturday's third game of the series. He'll face Juan Morillo (4-2, 3.14) in another 7:05 pm start.
