Springfield Cardinals News Release
Juan Richardson homered twice and Chris Lambert won his second straight start, as the first place Springfield Cardinals dropped the Frisco RoughRiders by a score of 8-5 on Friday night at Hammons Field. A sell-out crowd of 7,699 fans witnessed the Cards win for the sixth time in their last seven games, and improve their record to a franchise best, 12 games over .500 at 29-17.
Frisco starter Steven Rowe (1-2), making a spot-start for the injured Andy Walker, was lit up for eight runs in four-plus innings. An RBI triple by Rico Washington in the first inning put Springfield up 1-0. Richardson's first of two home runs on the night, a solo shot in the second, put the Cards up 2-0.
Frisco got a pair of runs in the fourth inning against Springfield starter Chris Lambert. Anthony Webster's RBI groundout put Frisco on the board, knocking in James Fasano, who walked to open the inning. Nate Gold later scored from third on a wild pitch, tying the game at 2-2.
The Redbirds took the lead in the fourth for good though, as Richardson came through with a monster blast to left field. His second homer of the night and eighth homer of the year, put Springfield up to stay at 4-2. Richardson is the third Springfield player this year to homer twice in a game.
The Cards piled on Rowe with four more in the fifth inning. Reid Gorecki and Rico Washington both had run-scoring doubles to highlight the inning, as Springfield went up 8-2.
Anthony Webster tried to single-handedly bring Frisco back into the game, homering against Lambert in the sixth, and then again against Rich Scalamandre in the eighth. Webster's second home run of the game, his third of the year, capped a four-RBI night, making it 8-5.
Mark Worrell came out of the bullpen in the eighth with one out, retiring both men he faced. After striking out the first two hitters in the ninth, Worrell gave up a double to James Fasano. Worrell recorded his league-leading 13th save of the year though, striking out Nate Gold with the tying run on-deck to end it.
Lambert (4-4) got the win, going a season-best seven innings. He allowed three runs on eight hits, recording eight strikeouts, while issuing just two walks.
The Cards look for their third straight win on Saturday evening, sending Stuart Pomeranz (6-0) to the hill. While Pomeranz looks to become the Texas League's first seven-game winner, Frisco will counter with Texas Rangers pitching prospect Thomas Diamond (3-1). 2,500 fans on Saturday night will receive a free Cardinals visor thanks to Bud Light. Game time from Hammons Field is 6:10pm. Tickets are still available for Friday night's game and all three games remaining in the home stand, by calling (417) 863-2143 or online at www.springfieldcardinals.com.
