Tulsa Drillers News Release

The Tulsa Drillers rallied for 8 runs in their final 3 at-bats to defeat the Corpus Christi Hooks 10-4 Friday night at Drillers Stadium. The win was the third in a row for the Drillers and kept them two games behind first-place Springfield in the North Division standings of the Texas League.

Trailing 4-2 entering the bottom of the sixth inning on Friday, Tulsa took advantage of a couple of Hooks miscues. Reliever Blake Allen replaced starter Mitch Talbot to begin the sixth and was met with a leadoff double by Joe Koshansky. After a groundout by Alvin Colina moved Koshansky to third, Allen was hurt by an error as Jud Thigpen reached safely and Koshansky scored on an error by shortstop Ben Zobrist. Another fielding mistake provided further help for the Drillers, as Christian Colonel followed with what appeared to be a routine popout in shallow right field, but the ball fell untouched for a gift base hit that put runners at first and third. Matt Macri provided a sacrifice fly to right field to score Thigpen and tie the game. Corpus Christi manager Dave Clark came out of the dugout to argue that Thigpen had left for home before the catch, but the homeplate umpire allowed the run to stand.

After the sacrifice, the Hooks called on Monte Mansfield to replace Blake and the call loomed even larger when pinch-hitter Joe Gaetti launched a drive high over the left field net give the Drillers their first lead at 6-4.

Tulsa increased the margin to 8-4 in the seventh inning and a Hooks error again helped. Jordan Czarniecki drew walk to start the seventh and Koshansky followed with a potential double play grounder to third. The bouncer went through the legs of third baseman Josh Bonifay, sending Czarniecki to third and allowing Koshansky to reach safely. Alvin Colina followed with an RBI single to left to make it 7-4. After a balk moved runners to second and third, Colonel scored Koshansky with a sacrifice fly.

The Drillers added two more runs in the eighth inning. Seth Smith plated pitcher Josh Newman, who had walked, with a base hit, and Troy Tulowitzki walked and scored on a groundout by Colina.

The 10-4 lead was more than enough for Newman who continued his strong work on the mound for Tulsa, keeping the Hooks scoreless over the final two innings. The outing was his 15th straight without allowing a run.

Jentry Beckstead gained the win, working a scoreless sixth inning in relief of Steve Register, while Jason Burch worked a scoreless seventh. Register pitched the first five innings, surrendering four runs on eight hits.

The Hooks actually out-hit the Drillers 15-11 in the game. Jonny Ash and J.R. House collected four hits each for Corpus Christi. Smith, Koshansky and Colina had two hits each to lead Tulsa.

Jud Thigpen hit his fourth homer of the season in the fourth inning for the Drillers.

The two teams will continue their series Saturday night in Tulsa. Juan Morillo (4-2, 3.14 ERA) will look for his team-leading fifth win of the season for the Drillers. He will work against Chance Douglass (3-1, 4.70 ERA) of the Hooks. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05PM.
