Modesto Nuts News Release

Modesto, CA. - After building an early lead, the Modesto Nuts surrendered five unanswered run in a 5-3 loss to the San Jose Giants on Thursday night at John Thurman Field.

After four innings, the Nuts (13-21; 39-65) had opened up a three-run lead against the Giants (16-18; 55-49) highlighted by Dom Nunez's solo home run.

Defense betrayed the Nuts and starter Helmis Rodriguez (L, 2-7) starting in the fifth. An error to open the fifth lead to two unearned runs to make it a one-run contest.

In the eighth, Dylan Davis delivered a game-tying RBI single leading to the only earned run of the game for the Giants. With two outs and two runners on, Logan Cozart entered out of the bullpen and got a strikeout of Daniel Carbonell but the third strike skipped passed the catcher Nunez. His throw to first was wide and went down the line leading to the two deciding runs.

Rodriguez went 7.2 innings allowing six hits with five runs allowed but only one earned with five strikeouts and two walks.

D.J. Snelten (W, 4-7) worked a scoreless seventh out of the Giants' bullpen.

Reyes Moranta (S, 7/6) surrendered two singles in the ninth but stranded them both to shut the door in the four-game series opener.

Game two of the four-game series is Friday night at 7:05 p.m. Coverage on ModestoNuts.com will start at 7:00 p.m. Listen live online.
