Portland Thorns FC News Release
PORTLAND, Ore. - Continuing a three-game homestand, Portland Thorns FC play host to the Washington Spirit, in a match presented by Amica Insurance, on Saturday, Aug. 17, at Providence Park. Beginning at 7:30 p.m. (Pacific), the match will be broadcast on Yahoo! Sports.
Recent form
Portland (8-3-6, 30pts) extended its home unbeaten streak to four games (3-0-1) with a 2-1 win over the North Carolina Courage on Aug. 11. Thorns FC conceded an early goal, but answered back with two goals in the second half to remain unbeaten in two matches against North Carolina (1-0-1) this season. Thorns FC currently sit in first place in the NWSL standings with seven games remaining in the regular season, with four points separating Portland in first place and Reign FC (26pts) in fourth place.
Home-field advantage
Since 2016, Portland has been one of the top teams in the NWSL at home, recording a league-best 28 home wins during that span. Offensively, Thorns FC have scored 87 goals at Providence Park in regular-season matches since 2016, which is 15 more goals than the next highest team (Chicago Red Stars - 72). Individually, Christine Sinclair has scored the third-most home goals (19) since 2016, while Lindsey Horan has tallied 13 of her 23 career goals at Providence Park.
Against Washington
Saturday's match marks the 18th meeting all-time between Portland and Washington in the regular season. Thorns FC lead the all-time series against the Spirit with a record of 9-3-5, including a mark of 5-0-3 at Providence Park. The two teams played to a 1-1 draw in the only meeting between the two clubs in 2018 at Providence Park on April 20. Individually, Tobin Heath has three goals in six career matches against Washington.
