Thorns FC Earn 2-0 Road Win Against Cascadia Rival OL Reign

SEATTLE - Portland Thorns FC scored a goal in each half, earning a 2-0 shutout win on the road against OL Reign at Lumen Field on Saturday evening. Sophia Smith scored in the early stages of the first half, while Christine Sinclair sealed the win with an 87th minute goal to give Portland its first win in Seattle since the 2017 season.

Goals, Goals, Goals

Portland has scored in 17 straight regular season matches on the road, tied for the longest such streak in NWSL history, held by Orlando (17 straight from June 2019 to August 2021). Dating back to the 2022 season, Thorns FC have scored multiple goals in 11 of their last 15 regular season games. Portland has scored in 15 consecutive regular season games, tallying 37 goals during that span. Notably, Thorns FC are the only team in the NWSL to score in all of their regular season matches in 2023.

Primetime Performers

Christine Sinclair scored her second goal of the season. She is the sixth player to tally multiple goals this season for Portland. Sinclair has scored in 60 different NWSL matches (all competitions), more than any other player in league history, breaking a tie with Sam Kerr and Lynn Williams. Sophia Smith tallied her fifth goal of the season. Her five goals are tied for most in the NWSL. Notably, four of Smith's five goals have come in road matches. Individually, Hina Sugita tallied her second assist of the campaign, while Morgan Weaver registered her first assist of 2023.

Against Seattle

Portland snapped an eight-game winless streak in regular season play against OL Reign. It was Thorns FC's first win against OL Reign in NWSL regular season play since Sept. 15, 2018. The win was the club's first at Lumen Field and the first on the road against OL Reign since 2017. In its last two trips to Lumen Field, Portland is 1-0-1 with multiple goals in both matches. Across all competitions, Sinclair has 11 goals against OL Reign with five goals coming in the regular season.

Goal-Scoring Plays

POR - Sophia Smith (Hina Sugita), 17th minute: Keeping possession in OL Reign's half of the field, Sam Coffey won the ball back near the right sideline and played a pass back toward the middle of the field for Hina Sugita. On the turn, Sugita delivered the ball to Sophia Smith just outside the box. Smith dribbled to the edge of the box and sent a curling strike inside the right post.

POR - Christine Sinclair (Morgan Weaver), 87th minute: Morgan Weaver dribbled down the left endline, turned and delivered the ball to Sinclair near the top of the box. Sinclair fired a perfectly placed strike inside the left post.

Notes:

Morgan Weaver recorded her first assist of the season.

Weaver is the ninth player to register an assist for Thorns FC this season.

Portland has scored 14 first-half goals this season - more than any team in the league.
