PORTLAND, Ore. - Closing out the Thorns FC Preseason Tournament, Portland Thorns FC shut out the Chicago Red Stars in a 1-0 win at Providence Park on Saturday night. Sam Coffey tallied the game winner for Portland in the final third of the game.
Thorns FC Preseason Debuts and Minutes
Abby Smith made her preseason tournament debut as a starter tonight, as well as her Thorns FC debut. Hina Sugita earned her first preseason start for Portland. Thorns FC Academy player Haley Miller subbed into the match late in the game, making her preseason tournament debut. Emily Menges and Natalia Kuikka started a third consecutive match in the tournament, the only players to start every match for Thorns FC.
Preseason Tournament Recap
Portland finished the tournament with a mark of 2-0-1, recording a 1-0 win over the Chicago Red Stars, a 3-0 win against the U.S. U-23 Women's Youth National Team, and a 0-0 draw with OL Reign. Thorns FC did not allow a goal in all 270 minutes of play, with Bella Bixby, Shelby Hogan and Abby Smith each earning a clean sheet in goal. Sam Coffey scored her first goal with Portland in tonight's win, and Sophia Smith registered a hat trick against the U.S. U-23s. Twenty-two players featured for Portland throughout the tournament, and 13 played in every match.

Next up, Thorns FC will kick off the 2022 NWSL Challenge Cup facing OL Reign at Lumen Field on March 18. The match is set for a 7 p.m. start (Pacific) on Paramount+.
