Spokane Indians News Release
SPOKANE, WA - It was grand salami time at Avista Stadium and Freddie Thon brought the mustard and rye bread, capping off a four hit night with a walk-off grand slam to give the Spokane Indians (4-3) an 8-5 victory over the visiting Everett AquaSox (3-4), the Seattle Mariners short-season affiliate. Even the light drizzle that fell most of the evening couldn't dampen the spirits of 2,858 Indians fans that went home happy for the second night in a row.
Trailing 6-3 heading into the home half of the 9th inning, the Indians mounted a dramatic comeback, highlighted by Thon's walk-off heroics. A trio of walks by Sox closer Edgar Guaramato (0-1) set the table for Thon, who promptly belted a shot over the GROTTO in right field, clearing the bases and giving the Indians the win.
Thon's slam was the icing on the cake to a career day for Thon, who finished the game 4-for-5 with a pair of runs scored and four driven in. All told, the Indians pounded out 10 hits and drew eight walks off of four Everett pitchers. Steve Murphy reached base four of the five times he came to the plate, finishing 2-for-3 with a pair of walks and scoring two runs. Right fielder John Mayberry, Jr. also collected two hits for the Indians, finishing the day 2-for-5 with a run scored. Luis Valbuena, who went 3-for-4 from the leadoff spot, paced Everett offensively.
After falling behind 6-3 after six innings of play, the Indians got stellar relief efforts by Broc Coffman and Juan Maldonado (1-0) who shut the AquaSox bats down over the final three frames. Coffman tossed two innings of no-hit baseball, while Maldonado followed with 1.1 innings of one-hit shutout relief to earn his first win of the season. The start of the three-hour and thirty-three minute game was delayed thirty-four minutes to prepare the field following intermittent rain showers during the day.
Tomorrow night's game will feature Juan Carlos Garcia taking the mound for the Indians, while the baby Mariners will send Rafael Soriano to the hill. Soriano will be making a rehabilitation start for the AquaSox, as he is recovering from an injury late in the 2004 season while pitching for the Seattle Mariners. Soriano underwent "Tommy John" surgery on his right elbow on Aug. 17 last year and spent the remainder of the season rehabilitating after surgery.
Hats off to tomorrow night's promotion...it's time for our annual Baseball Hat Night as Arby's, Pepsi, and the Inlander will be providing stylish new Spokane Indians baseball caps to the first 1,000 fans through the gates and all F&M Bank Diamond Club members.
