Lancaster Stormers News Release
Daryl Thompson certainly seems to have Lancaster's number.
The Southern Maryland right-hander checked the Barnstormers on only one hit over seven innings on Thursday evening as the Blue Crabs defeated Lancaster, 4-1, in the rubber game of a three-game series.
Lancaster fell back to .500 on the season while Southern Maryland jumped three games ahead of Long Island in the Liberty Division race.
Thompson (5-4) yielded only a clean two-out single to right off the bat of Daryle Ward in the fourth. He walked one and struck out two before being lifted for the Blue Crabs bullpen.
This was a continuation of the success that Thompson, a Charles County, Maryland native, had against the Barnstormers in 2012 when he allowed only five hits in 13 innings over two starts.
Southern Maryland, meanwhile, reached Dwayne Pollok for a pair of two-out, two-run rallies. In the third, following a double play, Mike Richard beat out an infield single. Sean Smith picked up a walk to move Richard to second. With both runners on the move, Renny Osuna sliced a line drive barely fair down the right chalk to knock in the pair for a 2-0 lead.
A double down the third base line and a home run onto the picnic deck in left by Smith added the other two Crabs runs in the fifth.
Pollok (6-3) went the distance, yielding eight hits and the four runs. The reigning Atlantic League Pitcher of the Year walked two and struck out five.
Lancaster finally reached the scoreboard in the ninth. Blake Gailen reached Jeff Stevens, Southern Maryland's third reliever for a double off the left field wall and motored to third on Olmo Rosario's deep fly to right. Travis Denker walked, creating a save opportunity for Jim Ed Warden. The 6-7 right-handed sidearmer allowed a run to score on a sac fly by Ward and allowed a single to Gustavo Molina bringing the tying run to the plate.
He got Kevin Howard to ground into a force play, notching his 13th save of the season.
The Barnstormers head home to face the Long Island Ducks in a three-game series beginning Friday night with fireworks following the game. Lancaster will send Brian Grening (4-2) to the mound against lefty Dontrelle (D-Train) Willis. Fans may tune into 1390-AM, WLAN; 1600-AM, WPDC; 1390wlan.com or the I Heart Radio cell phone app beginning at 6:45.
NOTES: Kody Kirkland sat out the game after being hit by a throw while sitting in the dugout on Wednesday evening...Ryan Harvey was injured diving for a line drive in the third inning...Lancaster used Nate Reed in the outfield until he left for Molina in the seventh...Molina played third, Howard moved to short and Olmo Rosario went to right...Ward extended his hitting streak to nine games, his longest of the season...Southern Maryland used 16 pitchers in the series, giving up only seven runs.
