KANSAS CITY, Kan. - For the second straight night, the Kansas City T-Bones reached double-digits in runs as they took down the Schaumburg Flyers 13-1 at CommunityAmerica Ballpark. The T-Bones improved to 8-2 on the season, maintaining their hold on first place.
In front of 4,468 fans, rookie Rick Rivas made his first professional start, allowing just one run on five hits over seven innings of work to pick up his first career victory.
Rivas was supported by another offensive outburst from Kansas City as they scored 13 runs for the second straight game. Schaumburg got their lone run in the first on a RBI single from Bo Hart, plating Mark Haske. Haske was the only runner to reach third base against Rivas.
The T-Bones responded in the bottom of the frame off Matt Varner with an RBI double from Jim Fasano, tying the game at one. After both teams were blanked in the second inning, Kansas City began their onslaught with 10 combined runs in the third and fourth innings.
After the first two batters in the third inning reached with singles, Brad Correll hit his second home run of the season to give the T-Bones a 4-1 lead. Ryan Smith added another run with an RBI single to cap off the frame.
Smith struck again in a six-run fourth, driving in four of Kansas City's runs off Doug Brooks that inning with a grand slam to push the score to 11-1. Smith finished the game with five RBI, going three-for-four in his T-Bones debut.
After a pinch-hit single from Steve Trout drove in Nick Jaros in the sixth, Kevin Mahar hit the T-Bones third home run of the game off David Byard to push the final total to 13-1.
Brady Martinez threw two perfect innings for Kansas City to close out the game.
The teams finish their four-game series tomorrow night with Anthony Boughner going for Kansas City against Brian Finch for the Flyers. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05.
Game Notes: Kansas City pitchers threw just 98 pitches over their nine innings versus 161 pitches for Schaumburg over their eight innings...The T-Bones have posted six-run fourth innings and 13 total runs in consecutive games.
