Goldeyes win 9-4 on Memorial Day; Jackhammers split the four-game series

JOLIET, IL - The Winnipeg Goldeyes hit three home runs against Joliet JackHammers (5-6) pitching to earn a 9-4 victory before 1,956 fans at Silver Cross Field on Monday afternoon. The JackHammers now welcome the Schaumburg Flyers to town for a three-game series beginning Tuesday.
The Goldeyes pushed two runs across home plate in the third inning. Demetrius Heath (2-5) reached on an error by Joliet third baseman Wally Backman, Jr. Kevin West (2-5) followed with a two-run home run against Joliet starter Brian Forystek (0-1) for a 2-0 Goldeyes lead.
Winnipeg scored two more runs in the sixth inning against Forystek and the JackHammers. Brent Metheny (1-4) reached first base with a leadoff walk and was forced out when Tydus Meadows (1-5) got on due to a fielder's choice. Meadows scored on a two-run home run by Trino Aguilar (2-5). The Goldeyes took a 4-0 lead.
The visitors scored three runs in the seventh inning to take a 7-0 lead. Max Poulin (1-3) led off the inning with a solo home run by Joliet reliever Kevin Altman. Fehlandt Lentini (2-5) then hit a single and stole second base. He scored on a double by Heath for a 5-0 lead. Brent Metheny (1-4) hit a double to score Heath and increase the lead to 7-0.
The JackHammers got on the board in the seventh inning when Cory Harris (2-4) led off the inning with a double and moved to third base when Freddy Thon (1-4) reached on an error. Doc Brooks (2-4) reached on a fielder's choice and Harris scored to make it 7-1.
Joliet pushed across three runs in the eighth inning. Eric Scriven (1-5) singled and went to third base on a double by Nick McIntyre (1-5). Joey Gomes (2-4) hit an RBI single to score Scriven and make it 7-2. Juan Diaz (1-3) followed with a RBI sacrifice fly and Brooks hit a RBI double to get the JackHammers within three runs at 7-4. That would be the closest the JackHammers would get. The Goldeyes scored two runs in the ninth inning against Joliet right-hander Mike Schellinger to pick up the victory.
Loose Gravel: The JackHammers had 10 hits in the game Sunday. Joliet pounded out 53 hits over the four-game series with the Goldeyes this weekend.
The JackHammers now welcome the Schaumburg Flyers to town for a three-game series beginning on Tuesday night at 6:05 p.m. It's our first Silver Cross Kids in Training Tuesday. Kids will warm-up on the field before the game and run the bases following the game. It's also our first Jammer's Book Buddies Night. Students enrolled in the program can exchange their reading club vouchers for lawn seats! (LHP) Brad Mumma (1-1, 6.55) gets the start for the Flyers against (RHP) Aaron Trolia (1-0, 2.77) for the JackHammers.
