SAINT JOHN - The Saint John Sea Dogs are excited to launch the third season of the "Canaport LNG Hat Trick For Reading" program, an educational initiative coordinated in partnership with Canaport LNG and the Anglophone School District - South.
Sea Dogs players Adam Bateman, Matthew Highmore, Austin Clapham and Kyle Ward joined Fleaburn, partnering officials, educators and students this morning to launch the program at Princess Elizabeth School.
The "Canaport LNG Hat Trick for Reading" program is aimed at roughly four thousand students between kindergarten and grade 3 at 32 schools between Grand Bay-Westfield and Hampton. Students are asked to read three books, and keep track of their progress on "Canaport LNG Hat Trick For Reading" bookmarks. Students submit their bookmark ballots for an in-class draw, and are eligible to win a voucher for three tickets to a Saint John Sea Dogs hockey game during the 2015-16 season.
"Canaport LNG is thrilled to be taking an active role in promoting literacy among our youth," said Pedro Boyra, Canaport LNG's General Manager."Literacy skills are an essential function of our daily lives and this program will help to improve these skills, while also engaging the kids and encouraging them to find a love for reading."
"Literacy is a priority of schools in Anglophone South and we know the importance of elementary students practicing their reading skills each day," said Superintendant Zoe Watson of Anglophone School District - South. "'Canaport LNG Hat Trick for Reading' is another example of the District working with the Sea Dogs as a community partner to support student learning. We are always appreciative of the Sea Dogs and their willingness to support us."
