Brandon Wheat Kings News Release

For forty minutes, the Brandon Wheat Kings and Medicine Hat Tigers went back and forth in an entertaining contest that showed off both teams' offensive potential. In the third, however, only the Tigers offense kept on rolling.

The Tigers rattled off four straight goals in the third period and took a 7-3 win to end the Wheat Kings' winning streak at two. Rylen Roersma, Brett Hyland, and Joby Baumuller provided the goals for the Wheat Kings in the loss.

"You've heard me talk about managing the puck and it was just awful in the third period," said head coach and GM Marty Murray. "That's the difference in the game."

The teams traded goals through the first 40 minutes, with the Tigers getting their first just 32 seconds in when a pass bounced off a Wheat Kings' stick and in behind Ethan Eskit. But Roersma had the answer before the period was out, busting up the left side and snapping home a shot to make it 1-1.

When the Tigers pulled ahead on a power play in the second period, off a slick passing play that ended with Hunter St. Martin snapping one to the top corner, the Wheat Kings again responded. This time it was Hyland's turn to pick a corner, taking a drop pass from Caleb Hadland and rifling it home.

Again the Tigers took the lead, with Oasiz Wiesblatt jamming away at a loose puck, and again the Wheat Kings tied it up. Sent into the clear by Hayden Wheddon, Baumuller walked in and snapped one to the far post to tie the score for the third time in the game.

The third was all Tigers almost right away, however. Hayden Harsanyi scored twice, and Tomas Mrsic provided a goal-of-the-week candidate where he split the defense and scored from his knees, before Wiesblatt struck again to make it 7-3.

The loss won't drop the Wheat Kings in the standings, but it does use up one of their games in hand on the Swift Current Broncos and Moose Jaw Warriors. Next up for the Wheat Kings is a three-in-three stretch through Alberta, starting with a trip to Calgary to play the Hitmen on Friday, January 26
