February 22, 2019 - United States Hockey League (USHL)
Dubuque Fighting Saints News Release
The Saints comeback effort fell just short on Friday night as the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders held on to win 4-3 at Mystique Community Ice Center. CR scored three first period goals to pace themselves and added another in the second to knock off the Fighting Saints. CR won their fifth straight with the win over Dubuque.
-It was a spirited affair from the get go and things started off with a bang, Both teams scored within the first five minutes of the game and Adam Backehag started things off for CR and Riese Gaber tallied a quick answer for the Fighting Saints. Gaber scored a beautiful breakaway goal for Dubuque.
-The RoughRiders showed just how potent they can be in the first period with another fantastic first 20. The RoughRiders are a +24 in the first period of action this season. CR has also scored in the first 10 minutes in 14 of their 24 wins this year.
-Aaron Randazzo played well in his relief roll of Matthew Thiessen. Thiessen was pulled after the first period, allowing three goals on six shots. Randazzo came in and settled things down for Dubuque with 13 saves on 14 shots.
-Blake Pietila continued his success against the Fighting Saints with a 26 save victory. Pietila is 10-3-0-1 since the winter break.
-The Saints and RoughRiders chippy series continued as Willie Knierim found himself right in the middle of things. Bram Scheerer recorded his first USHL fight and the after the whistle scrums were frequent. The teams will battle once more tomorrow night in Cedar Rapids.
-The Saints were down 4-1 after two periods, but showed good bounce back in the third. Dubuque scored early on the power play as Verners Egle split the defense for his ninth of the season. Chris Lipe then tallied from a sharp angle with under five minutes to play. The Saints even had a great chance with the goalie pulled, but Pietila had a solid cross-crease save on Matias Maccelli.
-Dubuque is now 2-2-1-1 against the RoughRiders this season. With the win, CR moved three points above Dubuque in the conference standings and the Cowbell Cup standings. -Moving forward, the Saints have one more game against the RoughRiders in February before they play them twice in the last three weeks of the season. Dubuque will be in CR tomorrow night
