Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins News Release

HERSHEY, Pa. - Three third period goals weren't enough for the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins to overcome a four-goal deficit, as the Hershey Bears posted a 5-4 win at the Giant Center on Saturday night. With the win the Bears (28-16-3-3, 64 points) bypassed the Penguins (28-18-2-3, 63 points) for second place in the East Division.

The Pens opened the scoring 12:01 into the game as Bobby Farnham took a Brendan Mikkelson pass and beat netminder Philipp Grubauer for his fourth tally of the season.

It looked like the visitors would take a 1-0 lead to the first intermission, but a Spencer Machacek high sticking penalty gave the Bears a late power play, and Casey Wellman capitalized with 21 seconds left in the opening frame to tie the game 1-1 after 20 minutes.

Dustin Gazley, who posted an overtime winner the last time the two teams met, tallied 32 seconds into the second period to give Hershey a 2-1 lead, and an advantage they would not relinquish on the night.

Ryan Potulny tallied with 25 seconds left in the middle period to stretch the lead to 3-1, and Dane Byers and Gazley scored 2:36 apart midway through the third period to make the score 5-1.

The Pens fought back, but it was too little, too late, as Nick Drazenovic, Brian Gibbons and Jayson Megna all found the back of the net in the final seven minutes of the game to finish off the scoring.

Eric Hartzell took the loss for the Penguins, allowing four goals on 32 shots before making way for Jeff Deslauriers. The Penguins are home Sunday to host the Bears at 4:05pm. Good seats for all Penguins home games are available at the Mohegan Sun Arena box office, online at TicketMaster.com, or by calling 800-745-3000.
